AOL Instant Messenger was born in 1997. It was the most famous instant messenger when the internet was just starting to become a real part of people’s daily life.

The Running Man

That yellow symbol called Running man, it was designed by JoRoan Lazaro and was implemented in the first release in 1997. In 90’ this was one of famous massaging software.

AOL using a different protocol for different AIM version and third-party AIM version. one of the standard protocol AIM uses is OSCAR open system for communication in real-time, this is standard protocol and giving a full feature of AIM’s hence AOL developed new and simple protocol name TOC in this protocol features are less as compared to OSCAR; but it’s providing chat functionality.

Privacy

AIM account is only for people who are above 13 the children less than 13 not allowed to make AIM account. under AIM privacy policy AOL has no right to read or monitor any user private message.
AIM is different from another messenger like Yahoo! it does not require adding one buddy to add another from buddy’s list, the result of this you will find unknown buddy’s on your list. you can block them but still, they can make a new account and watch your status and can monitor your online timing etc.

iPhone and iPad Application

On March 6, 2008, AOL announced AIM application for iPhone and iPod device this application is free on apple store, but the company providing a paid version for those who don’t want to see advertisements in their application.
on April 3, 2010, Apple release first-generation iPad and AOL release AIM application for iPad this come up with lot’s of features like geolocation, Facebook status updates and chat Myspace, Twitter, YouTube, and many social networking platforms

After 20 years, the time has come to say a final goodbye to AOL Instant Messenger.AOL announced in October that the beloved program would be shutting down on December 15, 2017.
