Air Clinic writing contest: Unfortunate Mrs Jones

in air-clinic •  7 years ago

Nora got up slowly and moved to the window. It was dawn and people were still asleep, apparently not her neighbours. Her apartment faced theirs and she could make out their shadowy figures as they ran about the apartment - Mr Jones in hot pursuit of his wife.

Last week, Nora had noticed some bruising on Mrs Jones face. It wasn't the first time she'd seen such on her but the sight of the heavy bruises had moved her to ask Mrs Jones if she'd been in an accident.

She'd replied yes but Nora hadn't believed her and on further questioning, Mrs Jones had broken down crying that she was her husband's punching bag and that the injuries had been inflicted by him. Nora wasn't surprised as she'd often heard them fighting.

She'd told Mrs Jones to put a stop to the battery by reporting to the police but she'd refused saying she loved her husband and that he'd change with time.

A louder crash and cry pulled Nora from her reverie. She grabbed her phone and rushed downstairs. It was time someone interfered and put a stop to Mr Jones's cruelty on his wife.

The door was open, she rushed in ready to call the authorities if it became necessary. The sight that met her stopped her cold. Mrs Jones lay unconscious in a pool of her blood while Mr Jones held her - crying and begging her to wake up that he was sorry and he hadn't meant to hurt her.

Nora stood there dazed, tears running down her cheeks. From his mumblings, she gathered that amidst the argument, he'd gone too far and pushed his wife down the stairs. Nora didn't say a word. She raised her phone and dialled 9-1-1. "There's been an accident, a case of wife battery. She's unconscious. Please send an ambulance immediately. Thank you"

Within the hour, Mr Jones was arrested. Mrs Jones was confirmed dead and her body taken to the mortuary. Nora watched it all with a heavy heart wishing she'd dialled emergency when she'd first heard them arguing that morning.
