A Cold Long Island Morning, the First of ManysteemCreated with Sketch.

Did you turn the heat on last night or this morning? Be honest...

I admit it...I broke the seal! Staying under a blanket all day just wasn't going to cut it. Temperatures dropped into the low 40s this morning with wind chill values in the 30s.

We all knew it was coming, and this is only the beginning. High temperatures will top out in the upper 40s this afternoon, and then we have another cold night to look forward to. A ring of Frost Advisories and Freeze Warnings around NYC have been issued for Friday morning.

While Nassau County avoids any of these (as does northeast NJ, southern Fairfield and Westchester, and the 5 boroughs), all of Suffolk County has a Frost Advisory for early Friday morning - 3am to 9am officially. If you haven't done so already, make sure to bring all delicate plants inside at some point today.

The average first frost date for Suffolk is October 21st - 31st, so we are only slightly ahead of schedule there. For Nassau County, it is November 1st - 10th, and for most of NYC it is November 11th - 20th. (source: plantmaps.com)

Despite the late November-like chill today, there will be abundant sunshine. An occasional breeze will stick around, but winds will be much lighter than during the past 12 hour period. Skies remain largely cloud-free overnight, allowing for good radiational cooling - us forecasters' fancy way of saying there will be no cloud cover to trap in any daytime heat, similar to taking plastic wrap off of a cup of warm water. It's a cold airmass to begin with, but this will help maximize heat loss and thus minimize temperatures tomorrow morning.

Friday afternoon temperatures will moderate some, 50s to near 60 across the Island. They look to stay seasonable on Saturday before another shot of clod air builds in Saturday night into Sunday. The wind will come back as well.

Apologies that I was unable to post yesterday evening about the weekend. Come back tonight for an in-depth look!

On the water: A small craft advisory remains in effect for the LI sound, bays, and Atlantic waters until 1pm. Northwest winds around 15 kt with gusts to 25 kt.
