Bandar udara ini mulai dibangun pada tahun 2000, selesai dibangun tahun 2003 dan mulai beroperasi sejak tahun 2004
dan setelah melakukan pengembangan pembangunan Bandara ini diresmikan oleh Presiden Jokowi pada tanggal 2 Maret 2016.dan saat ini bandara rembele telah melayani penerbangan Kormersil Rembele-Kualanamu (PP) menggunakan maskapai Wing Air.
