Akari Matsuri: Japan's Beautiful Homemade Lantern Festival in Onomichi

The Akari Matsuri homemade paper lantern festival is held in October in the port city of Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture.

Local schoolchildren make lanterns from candles and paper to place on the streets leading to the city's 16 temples. For the duration of the holiday, local authorities specially turn off the city lights on the streets where the candle lanterns are placed.
