Album Review: UNIQUE - Grandma // via Partiko

Hi, guys! Welcome to my review of UNIQUE's debut album, Grandma.

UNIQUE, aka Unique Salonga, is a Filipino artist, formerly the lead vocalist of IV of Spades — a band who gained massive popularity in the Philippines the past few months, known for hits like "Hey Barbara" and "Mundo". Unique recently left the group and went solo. Grandma is his first full-length album.

Grandma is a 12-track album released through O/C Records. It is a hypnotic, warm, and intimate album. It is a good mix of different genres including pop, blues, psychedelic rock, 80's pop, classic rock, folk, and synthpop. His sound is like a mix of Tame Impala, MGMT, The Beatles, The Doors, and Foxygen, but he takes a more minimal route.

My favorite tracks on the album are the psychedelic "Cha-Ching", the dancefloor-ready "OZONE (Itulak Ang Pinto)", the sweet and intimate "Midnight Sky", "Apoy Ng Kandila", and "We Know". I especially like "Sino", with its ethereal synth pads, consistent beat, and catchy melody. His vocal work on this track is phenomenal! That's really one of his strengths — his singing ability. And it shines through on this track. I love the blend of his falsetto and his chest voice. It's really a top-notch track!

His songwriting and singing really shines through on this album. I love the way this album was produced. It's fresh and you don't normally hear this in a major OPM release, so plus points for that! I think that this is really a brave move for Unique. The decision to go solo was already a brave move, but to release an album like this is a braver one for me.

I was looking for more action though in terms of the instrumentation. But for the great production, mixing, great vocals, and songwriting, I'm giving this album an 8/10!
