The Book of Maccabees tells us the story of the Maccabean dynasty that developed between the 1st and 2nd centuries BC in the present-day Palestine. The book begins with the story about Alexander the Great, conqueror of the Persian empire.
It is interesting to note that the Bible does not make an important description of Alexander, it simply implies that he passed through Israel and that he conquered the known world, from Egypt and Greece to the ends of India. Alexander the Great was always interested in discoveries and spiritual matters.
When Alexander invades the Persian empire, he goes to the city of Gordium, and there he unties the famous Gordian knot with the blow of his sword, a famous oracle stated that whoever untied that knot would become King of Asia. After this, he invades Egypt and visits the oracle of Siwa where he is proclaimed pharaoh and "son of the Gods".
When Alexander passed through the land of Israel, the inhabitants of the country were simply known by the greek army as "Canaanites".
Given these facts, it is possible that the Jewish religion, as it is currently known, that is, a religion of a nation, is the realization of the Maccabean dynasty, that is, a reaction to the prevailing Hellenism in the middle east between the first and second centuries before Christ.
About the life of Alexander the Great the Bible tells us:
"This history begins when Alexander the Great, son of Philip of Macedonia, marched from Macedonia and attacked Darius, the king of Persia and Media. Alexander enlarged the Greek Empire by defeating Darius and seizing his throne. He fought many battles, captured fortified cities, and put the kings of the region to death. As he advanced to the ends of the earth, he plundered many nations; and when he had conquered the world, he became proud and arrogant. By building up a strong army, he dominated whole nations and their rulers, and forced everyone to pay him taxes.
When Alexander had been emperor for twelve years, he fell ill and realized that he was about to die. He called together his generals, noblemen who had been brought up with him since his early childhood, and he divided his empire, giving a part to each of them." 1 Maccabees 1:1-7
