Wtf

Hello everyone. So it's been about a month now since I've started thinking and looking into cryptocurrencies. As we all know bitcoin is at the top of the chain.
I'm really having a hard time trying to find the right sites to help me as a beginner get setup and understanding all the other different types of alt coins. The only real thing that I have found so far is a lot of headaches and more confusion and most videos and searches would mostly take me to some type of bitcoin site.
I'm not really computer friendly either. I also do not really have much to invest in heavy N.A.S.A. Built crypto mining computer. So I'm really looking forward to people honest opinion and maybe guide to point me in the right direction.
Am I able to mine a lower currency to buy a higher currency using a normal laptop or desktop? What are the type of currency to stay away from due to scams and how do I watch out for scams? What is a good program to be able to mine different types of coins?
I really hope that this is a good community that supports each other to help make this site grow. I really appreciate any and everyone honest opinion and help.
