All Time Record October High Temperature Tied At Islip

This was quite a day for Long Island where 90 degree days are rare after August. We came close to 90 degrees today at Islip but the 88 degree high tied the all time record for the month of October. Every major observation station around Long Island either set record high temperatures or all time October record high temperatures. This steam heat was a one day affair as a cold front is passing through now and we are going from bathing suits to sweaters on Thursday. Actually a light rain jacket may prove handy.

The front has passed through and we will see temperatures fall overnight into the 50s. Radar is showing a boundary of heavy downpours and a few thunderstorms to the south of Long Island moving southeastward. We should't see too much in the way of rain until tomorrow morning as the front stalls to our south and a wave of low pressure moves eastward. This could bring some rain in around daybreak

Thursday is going to be a bit of a shocker for us with the onshore wind from a chilly high to the north plus the prospect of on and off rain during the day Thursday and into Thursday night. Most highs on Thursday will not get out of the 50s which puts us 30 degrees lower than yesterday.

As far as rainfall is concerned it has been so bone dry over the last month that everything is brown. Today certainly didn't help the cause but tomorrow's rain will be an on and off all day affair and will have the opportunity to soak in to the dry ground. Rainfall amounts of a half to three quarters of an inch are possible.

The rain should last into the early morning hours of Friday as low pressure goes by and a cold front moves offshore. Then we can look forward to a rather windy day on Friday with clouds giving way to sunshine and a gusty north northwest wind. Temperatures Friday will be in the 60s which is where we should be this time of year. Then it is on to Friday night into Saturday morning as a cold high to the north sends down chilly air. By Saturday morning lows will be in the low to mid 40s but some 30s are possible in the pine barrens in Eastern Suffolk County.

Saturday will be a day for apple and pumpkin picking with lots of sunshine and highs just into the 60s after a chilly start. Skies should be clear Saturday night but clouds will arrive on Sunday as winds go to the south. Highs will be in the 60s. Some showers will move in Sunday night and we will see some rain or showers through Monday as another cold front passes through. Then another cool dry air mass follows for the middle of next week. October weather is finally here!
