Aloes are succulent plants. meaning the leaves have thick, juicy leaves which helps the plants survive in hot dry climates. The rosettes of leaves have a waxy surface and are quite attractive, and vary in colour from blue- green to other shades of green, and often with interesting patterns. The flowers are quite special,, and the hybrid varieties can be spectacular. Flowering in late winter, the flowers form in spikes of many colours, depending on the variety. Plant varieties can vary from short under 1 metre high to tree-like specimens, so there is one to use for most garden situations. Plant them in a full sun position with well-drained soil, and water them sparingly. Thye grow best in Warm and temperate climates, but will not tolerate frosts. One specialist Aloe grower has a good website you can have a look at ; https://aloe-aloe.com.au
I photographed these Aloes in a local Sydney Nursery. The flowers have not yet opened, but the plants are very handsome.New5 080.JPG

Aloe is a cactus-like plant that grows in hot, dry climates. In the United States, aloe is grown in Florida, Texas, and Arizona. Aloe produces two substances, gel and latex, which are used for medicines. Aloe gel is the clear, jelly-like substance found in the inner part of the aloe plant leaf. Aloe latex comes from just under the plant's skin and is yellow in color. Some aloe products are made from the whole crushed leaf, so they contain both gel and latex. The aloe that is mentioned in the Bible is an unrelated fragrant wood used as incense.

Aloe medications can be taken by mouth or applied to the skin. People take aloe gel by mouth for weight loss, diabetes, hepatitis, inflammatory bowel diseases, osteoarthritis, stomach ulcers, asthma, radiation-related skin sores, fever, itching and inflammation, and as a general tonic. A chemical in aloe called acemannan is taken by mouth for HIV/AIDS. Aloe extract is used for high cholesterol.

Aloe latex is taken by mouth mainly as a laxative for constipation. It is also used for seizures, asthma, colds, bleeding, lack of a menstrual period, swelling of the colon (colitis), depression, diabetes, eye conditions that cause blindness (glaucoma), multiple sclerosis, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, joint inflammation, osteoarthritis, and vision problems. Fresh aloe leaves are taken by mouth for cancer.

Fav. comment Award !! Well done, you chose great Pics.

@ctrl-alt-nwo, That would be nice description and photography indeed post about Aloes. We used it for medical treatments. Some ladies keep juicy Aloes on their faces and eyes for be cool and be beauty. But I never see live Aloes flowers yet.

The first step in aloe vera plant care is to realize that this plant is a succulent. Like cacti, succulents do best in dry conditions. When growing aloe vera plants, plant them in a cactus potting soil mix or a regular potting soil that has been amended with additional perlite or building sand. Also, make sure that the pot has plenty of drainage holes. Aloe vera plants cannot tolerate standing water. One important thing in the care of aloe vera houseplants is that they have proper light. Aloe vera plants need bright light, so they do best in south- or west-facing windows.

Another important part of how to grow an aloe plant is to water the plant properly. The soil of the aloe vera plant should be allowed to go completely dry before being watered. When the aloe plant is watered, the soil should be thoroughly drenched, but the water should be allowed to drain freely from the soil. The most common reason an aloe plant dies is that the owners water too often or do not allow the water to drain. Do not make this mistake when taking care of aloe houseplants.

People have been growing aloe vera plants for literally thousands of years. It is one of the most widely used medicinal plants on the planet. Many species of aloe are popular houseplants because they are also very versatile and able to thrive indoors without requiring much care. This is beneficial because live plants like aloe can improve air quality and help promote a healthier indoor environment.

That’s true! Aloes are also great for your skin, especially the liquid inside the leaves. That’s why Aloe vera is the most widely known. We actualy have one in our flower pot and once in a while my wife cuts a small piece of it.

The small piece cuts in half and she uses the liquid inside the leaves for her skin. Mostly face skin. Aloes’s leaves are very common ingredient in face creams and overall creams.

However, if they never flowered they would still be extremely popular plants for gardeners, collectors, landscapers and public gardens.

You find it in many homes and gardens and it also goes by many other names as well – Aloe barbadensis, First Aid Plant, True Aloe, African Aloe, Burn Plant and Miracle Plant, to mention a few. This beneficial plant with purpose is really easy to grow in your home and in the garden so stay tuned because there are care tips coming your way.

Indoors, it needs as much light as possible, like a south of west exposure. This is not a low light plant & if it’s not getting the light it needs, the leaves will droop downwards. Just be sure to keep it away from hot glass (like a west exposure) because it’ll burn. It can be near that window but not in it.

The aloe vera plant is an easy, attractive succulent that makes for a great indoor companion. Aloe vera plants are useful, too, as the juice from their leaves can be used to relieve pain from scrapes and burns when applied topically. Here’s how to grow and care for aloe vera plants in your home!

Aloe vera plants have thick, variegated leaves that fan out from the plant’s central stem. Keep the aloe vera plant in a pot near a kitchen window for everyday use.

The “true” medicinal aloe from ancient times is Aloe vera, a yellow-flowered Arabian aloe which only exists in cultivation, and can only be grown true from offsets. This plant was formerly known as Aloe barbadensis.

It is generally unspotted, clumps freely, and reaches a larger size than the other common medicinal aloe in cultivation, Aloe officinalis (formerly known as Aloe vera chinensis), which can usually be distinguished by orange or coral flowers. Aloe vera gel is used for the topical relief of skin ailments, while Aloe officinalis is said to have benefits when consumed. In addition, Aloe ferox juice extract is promoted for various uses including as a laxative. Do not consume any aloe you cannot definitively identify as medicinal, which usually requires seeing the flowers. This is a diverse genus of many non-medicinal plants and even a few poisonous ones.

A beautiful plant, my friend and Aloe vera plants, aloe barbadensis, are perennial plants in the lily family known for their healing and soothing properties. The thick, succulent leaves are pale grayish-green with lighter spots and points along the edges and filled with a viscous gel. Plants are vase-shaped and spread by shallow roots. There are around 450 species of aloes ranging in size from a few inches to a few feet.

The cultivation of aloe vera presents a number of specific challenges that growers should understand. These challenges most commonly relate to watering, temperature, and soil.

If growing an aloe in a container, make sure it has drain holes in the bottom so the plant doesn't develop root rot from too saturated conditions.

Aloe vera is easily propagated by removing the developing pups surrounding the mother plant and planting inside a container. The plant also develops seedheads on spent blooms though it can take two weeks to several months for the seeds to germinate.

If planting the seeds, place the seeds on top of the soil and cover with approximately 1/8-inch of soil, as planting too deep can delay or be detrimental to them sprouting. Keep the soil moist and in a sunny location until germination occurs. Thank you @ctrl-alt-nwo

7 Amazing Uses for Aloe Vera

Overview
Aloe vera gel is widely known to relieve sunburn and help heal wounds. But did you know that your favorite potted plant can be used for much more than sunburn relief and household décor?

The succulent has a long history of being used for medicinal purposes, dating back to ancient Egypt. The plant is native to North Africa, Southern Europe, and the Canary Islands. Today, aloe vera is grown in tropical climates worldwide. From relieving heartburn to potentially slowing the spread of breast cancer, researchers are just beginning to unlock the benefits of this universal plant and its many byproducts.

Heartburn relief
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder that often results in heartburn. A 2010 review suggested that consuming 1 to 3 ounces of aloe gel at mealtime could reduce the severity of GERD. It may also ease other digestion-related problems. The plant’s low toxicity makes it a safe and gentle remedy for heartburn.

Very nice. Aloe for me means I spent too much time in the sun, can't tell you the countless times I've used this plant to help cool a minor sun burn. And can't tell you in how many different countries either :) Hope you are having a great day! From Kiev Ukraine! -Dan

I got some in my garden! It would be nice if I could put this into my salad!

Institute for Aloe studies

Preservation, Conservation and Education
The Institute for Aloe Studies is dedicated to fostering increased knowledge and understanding of Aloes through study, plant propagation, preservation of collections and conservation of habitat.

As you browse through this website, you'll find a wide variety of information and resources to help further your personal study of Aloes. In our Species section, we provide a photographic record and scientific descriptions of different species of Aloe. To augment our information, we've also provided links to various additional resources, both print and web, in our Resources section. You'll find botanical paintings, aloe related postage stamps, photographs of our projects and other aloe related items in our Gallery.

The Institute for Aloe Studies supports the propagation of Aloes by offering plants for sale to the general public. In our Store, you'll find plants for sale from our established collection, the result of cultivating seeds and cuttings to perpetuate and disseminate the different species of Aloe. By offering these domestically produced plants, we hope to reduce pressure on wild populations suffering from illegal collection.

As an added benefit, our collection of plants serves as a DNA database. Many species of Aloe are becoming rare in their native habitat. We are also exchanging plant material with other botanical institutions. The Institute for Aloe Studies will develop and offer horticulturally desirable Aloe hybrids.

By working with botanists, the Institute for Aloe Studies supports the conservation of Aloes by determining which Aloes are most threatened, distributing domestically produced plants, and supporting the establishment of reserves and protected habitat.

Growing Aloe Outdoors: Can You Grow Aloe Outside

Aloe is not only a lovely succulent plant but also an excellent natural medicinal to have around the home. It is commonly grown as a house plant but a lucky few zones can grow them year around outdoors. Some varieties have a cold tolerance below 32 F. (0 C.) with a bit of protection. Growing Conditions for Aloes Aloe plants are native to Africa and grow in many climates. There are over 400 species of aloe, with Aloe vera one of the best known. Aloe vera is not frost tolerant and cannot withstand chilling temperatures, but there are alpine varieties that have cold tolerance to nearly freezing. Aloe grows in USDA zones 8 to 11 outdoors. Can you grow aloe outside of these zones? You can in the summer in a container, but you should move it indoors for the cold season.

Aloes grow in poor soil with good drainage. They require full sun for at least six hours per day but best growth is found where they receive at least eight hours of bright light. The growing conditions for aloes vary in their native habitat. Aloe polyphylla is a variety that is grown in the mountains of Lesotho and there are others which thrive in coastal or grassland locations. The plants store water in their leaves, which means they can go long periods without water. They do need regular watering but are very tolerant of drought conditions for short periods.

Aloe Plants in the Garden As a rule, you cannot grow the Aloe vera plant outside of its recommended zones except in a container in summer, then move the plant indoors to a sunny location for the winter. In areas that have milder climates, you can grow wide variety of aloe plants in the garden. Try Aloe arborescens and Aloe ferox. Both are quite hardy specimens that will do well outside even in moist temperate zones. Aloes are good as stand alone plants or produce lovely displays when combined with other succulents in a container. Try growing aloe outdoors in a container that will also allow you to bring them indoors if a freeze threatens.

How Can You Grow Aloe Outside? Placing your aloe plant outdoors in appropriate zones doesn’t require any special care as long as the site is sunny and the soil is loose and gritty. In other regions, either keep the plant in a container to move, if necessary, or apply protection. For occasional freezes, cover the plant with a large plastic container if the cold period is just overnight. If the cold snap is longer, you will need to spread a thick mulch or straw around the root base to also protect the root zone. Growing aloe outdoors in beds where the cold is consistent and long in duration is not recommended. To save the plant, just keep it in a pot and move it outside when temperatures are warm. Gradually expose the plant to light when transitioning to outdoor life to prevent sunburn and let it acclimate to the new conditions.

Very beautiful "Aloe". I have not seen such, in our country "Aloe" grow only houses in pots. But despite this for us, "Aloe" is a real panacea for colds. In folk medicine it is used very often and that it is interesting "aloe" should be fulfilled not less than 3 years. Only then it acquires curative properties. Juice "Aloe" I drip children from colds in the nose, very effective. Very popular plant that is available in almost every apartment.

A very popular plant, which is available in almost every apartment, is aloe or as it is also called "century". It is often used as a "home doctor". The plant is very unpretentious and there are usually no problems associated with caring for it, as a rule. This plant can well withstand the lack of light, moisture, and heat.
Absolutely all the cultural types of aloe are suitable for keeping them in the room conditions and they can even garden the children's rooms. Those species, which used to be extremely rare, are now increasingly decorated with winter gardens. Stoletnik will be an excellent addition to the composition process, which includes slow-growing plants.

Thank you for showing these wonderful plants! Many have never seen the flowering of aloe. We have representatives of this species, but, flowering did not begin. The structure of seculents, and this vitreous body, is similar to all. But, some, suffer severe frosts, others, no. I used to see a lot of secularists in the cemetery. There was a real fashion for these plants. All the graves were covered with them. And now. Frosts happen very strong here, down to -25 degrees Celsius, these plants survive.

Aloe is very good plant . It's gel is beneficial in skin problems and it's juice is beneficial in stomach problems .

Very beautiful flowers. And yet, they are very useful, because they have many healing properties.

Очень красивые цветы. А еще, они очень полезны, так как обладают многими лечебными свойствами.

It is such a hard fight to grow aloe vera here in germany and on the other side of the world in australia it is growing like weeds.

love that plant. while i was gardening i had a rash on my arm from another plant, so i rubbed some aloe vera on it and within 15min it was gone.

Aloes: striking outsides, relieving insides

Aloe vera. In one minute, this loved, toothed succulent can assert a bit of your skin. In the following, subsequent to agony something far more prominent, regardless of whether it's "only a tissue twisted" (in Monty Python terms), the aloe can be utilized to calm your little owie. What number of different plants can do that? (We'll sit tight here for an answer before proceeding. Or on the other hand not.)

Aloe vera is the most renowned of the medical aid aloes, yet species, for example, cape aloe (A. ferox) and Perry's aloe (A. perryi) are likewise prized for their consoling properties. Those are nevertheless three of the approximately 500 species known to exist, in addition to the numerous nursery presentations looked for by planters and gatherers.

Local to southern Africa, Madagascar, and the Arabian Peninsula, aloes run from clench hand measured to trees, however all have gel-filled, spear molded clears out. They blossom for a little while, regularly in winter, sending up waxy, burn like blooms in splendid shades of orange, yellow, or rose-red. A few, similar to burn aloe (A. arborescens), are universal in broad daylight and private spaces. Regardless of whether you're impeccably content with normal aloes or pine for those not effortlessly sourced, they are awesome for drawing in hummingbirds and in addition for putting forth strong expressions.

Considered overall, aloes are adaptable garden members, with numerous species flourishing in water-niggardly, liberally warmed scenes and others exceeding expectations as houseplants or yard stars. Most ought to do fine in the considerable center between those illustrations, in spite of the fact that ice can be an issue with a few animal groups. Aloes make great pool-and structure-neighboring plants in view of their shallow, non-sprawling root frameworks and absence of leaf litter. By and large figure on permeable, all around depleted soils and unobtrusive watering plans.

To the stun of nobody perusing this, we at Altman are huge devotees of aloes and our reproducing group has built up a few assortments. The following are a bunch of our top choices — drifting toward the little side — that you can discover at our online shops or, at times, at retail accomplices, for example, The Home Depot, Lowe's, and Walmart.

Aloe

Aloe ( /ælˈoʊi/, /ˈæloʊi, ˈæloʊ/), also written Aloë, is a genus containing over 500 species of flowering succulent plants.[3] The most widely known species is Aloe vera, or "true aloe", so called because it is cultivated as the standard source of so-called "aloe vera" for assorted pharmaceutical purposes.[4] Other species, such as Aloe ferox, also are cultivated or harvested from the wild for similar applications.

The APG IV system (2016) places the genus in the family Asphodelaceae, subfamily Asphodeloideae. Within the subfamily it may be placed in the tribe Aloeae.[5] In the past, it has been assigned to the family Aloaceae (now included in the Asphodeloidae) or to a broadly circumscribed family Liliaceae (the lily family). The plant Agave americana, which is sometimes called "American aloe", belongs to the Asparagaceae, a different family.

The genus is native to tropical and southern Africa, Madagascar, Jordan, the Arabian Peninsula, and various islands in the Indian Ocean (Mauritius, Réunion, Comoros, etc.). A few species have also become naturalized in other regions (Mediterranean, India, Australia, North and South America, Hawaiian Islands, etc.).[2]

Description
Most Aloe species have a rosette of large, thick, fleshy leaves. Aloe flowers are tubular, frequently yellow, orange, pink, or red, and are borne, densely clustered and pendant, at the apex of simple or branched, leafless stems. Many species of Aloe appear to be stemless, with the rosette growing directly at ground level; other varieties may have a branched or unbranched stem from which the fleshy leaves spring. They vary in color from grey to bright-green and are sometimes striped or mottled. Some aloes native to South Africa are tree-like (arborescent).[6]

Systematics
The APG IV system (2016) places the genus in the family Asphodelaceae, subfamily Asphodeloideae.[5] In the past it has also been assigned to the families Liliaceae and Aloeaceae, as well as the family Asphodelaceae sensu stricto, before this was merged into the Asphodelaceae sensu lato.

The circumscription of the genus has varied widely. Many genera, such as Lomatophyllum,[7] have been brought into synonymy. Species at one time placed in Aloe, such as Agave americana, have been moved to other genera.[8] Molecular phylogenetic studies, particularly from 2010 onwards, suggested that as then circumscribed, Aloe was not monophyletic and should be divided into more tightly defined genera. In 2014, John Charles Manning and coworkers produced a phylogeny in which Aloe was divided into six genera: Aloidendron, Kumara, Aloiampelos, Aloe, Aristaloe and Gonialoe.[9]

The Aloe Vera Story

History has shown us that aloe vera is one of the oldest mentioned plants on record due to its medicinal properties and health benefits. Ancient Chinese and Egyptians used aloe vera to treat burns, wounds, and reduce fever. Legend reports that Alexander the Great, upon the advice of Aristotle, conquered the island of Socotra, off the coast of Africa, to secure supplies of aloe vera in order to treat wounded soldiers. Cleopatra used aloe in her daily skin treatments. In 1944, the Japanese who were exposed to the “A” bomb applied aloe gel to their wounds and reported faster healing and less scaring.

Aloe vera (barbadensis Miller) is grown commercially for the health and moisturizing benefits found inside its leaves. The aloe vera plant is one of the most studied herbs in the natural products category. An adult aloe vera plant reaches maturity at 3-4 years and can reach a height of 30 inches with up to 21 leaves.

Aloe vera contains over 200 biologically active, naturally-occurring constituents including polysaccharides, vitamins, enzymes, amino acids, and minerals that promote nutrient absorption, digestive health, a healthy immune system, and a reduction of nitrates. Learn more about what makes aloe beneficial.

The Most Common Reasons People Use Aloe Vera:
Support healthy digestion
Moisturize and hydrate skin
