Winter here in the southern hemisphere is the time when aloes begin to bloom. I just love the vibrant red and orange candlesticks that appear in various gardens and in the open places.
Since many aloe species are native to South Africa and are pretty hardy and drought tolerant plants, they are widely seen in suburban gardens here in Cape Town.
I took a few shots with my cellphone whilst out walking the dog.
This first one is of a diligent bee working to dig the pollen and nectar out of the lovely inflorescence of the bright aloe.
And this magnificent specimen had 23 separate "candlesticks." Isn't it fabulous.
