Alphabet Art Challenge Day 17 - Quilt

Alphabet Art Challenge Day 17

I chose quilt today as a tribute to my aunt who was quilt crazy. When I was a child she was always in the middle of her latest project, which was usually a gift to a special friend or family member. This is the first time I've designed a quilt digitally, I look forward to the day I make my first IRL quilt.

Here's a look at two blocks from one of the many quilts made by my aunt.

I found the photo for that afghan I made that looked like a quilt pattern. I made it in 2004....so long ago. Here's a poor quality picture but you'll get the idea. Screen Shot 2017-12-26 at 7.26.26 PM.png

Oh, that's so cool @countrygirl!! I ♥ it. No doubt you spent many, many hours putting it together. The chocolate browns make me think of hot cocoa on a cold winter day. Thank you for finding and sharing your crocheted quilt!

It was a work of love, that's for sure. Glad I found it for you because it was hard to explain.

Me too, I will remember this.

This is a cool little expirement... i think it would look dope printed on a paper with a heavy texture.. like a real printed quilt hahaha

I like that idea, I hadn't even thought about what else (besides a quilted quilt) could be done with this design. I was so happy I figured out how to make the different triangles into patterns I forgot to change the colors from grey!

hahahahaha that eureka moment... and then I forget to do the rest of the art lol

This is an interesting challenge. Q is probably one of the hardest words to figure out with this too!

Some letters are definitely more challenging to depict than others. Thanks for stopping by.

the design you came up with would be a really cool quilt. i wonder what colors it would be...
I wonder if there is like an age you have to pass before you are officially allowed to start quilting? My grandma made a ton of quilt blankets, each kid in the family had one and then she just kept making them.
The detail your aunt put into each of those blocks seems very impressive (not to mention time consuming) Did she do all 50 states? I live right near that star on the Ohio one lol

I wonder if there is like an age you have to pass before you are officially allowed to start quilting?

No way! Anyone can quilt. Well anyone with lots of spare time, solid arithmetic skills and an empty room can quilt might be more accurate! It's definitely a hobby with a lot of accessories...

Did she do all 50 states?

She made a block for each state our family has lived in. My grandfather's job required a lot of moving when my dad and his sisters were growing up. For this quilt she also embroidered the signatures of everyone in the family into one of the blocks.

Do you still have any quilts made by your grandma? I know it must get cold where you're at up there!

I just meant that I still don't know where old people get their clothes; where do they get the same pants that they all wear....and same shoes? I've never seen them in stores. I just assume once you hit 70 a letter in the mail comes detailing where you go to get the same clothes as every other 70+ year old....

I still have at least one, and it is in great condition; must have been well made! She made so many they are still probably in just about every place my family is right now.

I'm getting close to that age and I wear Blunstone boots, converse runners, ripped jeans, big sweaters, Helly Hansen coats, Uggs, plaid shirts, and basically shop at stores most people do.

I don't think there is a style for any age. Just sayin'. Age is just a number.

I have my own quilts, crocheted. Have made them for many people. One I crocheted is similar to @enternamehere 's pattern. It was a huge undertaking to make triangles and then sew them all together just like cloth.

Crochet, another skillful craft!

Do you know what the difference is between an afghan and a quilt?? One day I'm going to learn how to do these kind of things (knitting, crochet, quilting and the like).

Yes I know what the difference is. Yes yes :) But I did crochet an afghan in the style of a quilt. I will see if I can find a photo to show you. I had to crochet triangles which was not easy and then put those small pieces together to form something similar to what you sketched.

I know that quilts are hand sewn patches of fabric. I do have a couple of those around - I didn't make them though.

I don't know how to knit though. I have all the supplies but just have a hard time with it. I can crochet almost anything without a pattern now bc I've been doing it for 40 + years.

I'm not really sure the terminology of everything involved in these textile crafts, so I didn't actually know what the difference was between the two blankets types. I should have said, 'can you educate me on the difference between a quilt and an afghan'.☺

I tried crochet once or twice and couldn't figure it out, but I do know a triangle wouldn't be the easiest shape! I'd love to see a picture of your work.

When I have my own house I'll start learning how to make these kind of things! These kinds of hobbies require enough space to stay organized.

I figured you were asking me the difference. I know you weren't being a snark. I don't think you have a snarky bone in your body :) You are very sweet to want to clarify though.

Yes....a lot of space is needed for any craft or art hobby. I have a big house and my basement is full of things I kept to do something with one day. I need to clean it out bc after a few years it's evident I'm not going to do anything with them. I have a ton of ideas but never execute.

I need to get outside tomorrow. I haven't been out in a few days. We just had a beautiful snowstorm and another one is on the way. I like to see the lights against the snow....very pretty.

Lucky you to have a handmade quilt for so long, hold on to that one.

After my grandfather passed away last year we spent months cleaning up their house...in their case, they basically never threw anything away, so the clothes they wore were the same clothes they had been wearing for decades. My grandparents grew up in Kansas during the Depression, and they were pretty conservative in more ways than one.

At the same time, I've known other people in their 60's and 70's who have never been "old people" and people younger than 30 who act like they've lived a lifetime of hard labor. So I guess it really depends on the person.

How many turns we've taken from a simple digital quilt! ☺

Love quilts, I have a friend that is amazing at it. Can't imagine, but glad someone knows how. I like your method here, seems a bit more do-able, and easier on the fingers when I get them in the way.
Wow, up to Q...amazing.
Hope your holiday is shaping up well, and will be much fun and joyocity.
(Those pesky L.D.T.'s...) Made me smile.

Yes, I agree this method is much faster and easier, although it is a lot less warm on a cold night. One day, I'll experience the real joy of quilting for myself.

Q has come and gone, time does fly by, doesn't it? Thank you for stopping by and for the holiday wishes - right back atcha!

I loved doing quilting, needlepoint, and cross-stitch back in middle school. Not the best activities for a boy to pursue if he wanted to be popular. I managed to keep the hobby under wraps until the mandatory "Home Economics" class of 7th grade, when the teacher was so impressed with my pillow making that she made me tutor the girls who couldn't quite get it.

But it turns out some chicks dig a guy who can stitch a shoo-fly.

Out of curiosity, how did you first discover your love for stitching when you were young? Glad to hear it worked out to your advantage ;)
