Day 1: Secret No. 1. Commitment

Secret No. 2: TEAMWORK

WHAT IT MEANS

To better understand what teamwork means, I will use the example of a pilot and a copilot to explain it. In modern flight, the two people that are at the control of the flight are usually referred to as pilot and copilot. While one is doing the flying the plane, the other will be assisting with ATC calls, paper work and other secondary duties. And for the flight to be safe and smooth, it will definitely require the collaboration of the two, i.e. the pilot and the copilot. So the two have to work hand in hand or as a team for the safe landing of the plane.
In the same hand, for a marriage to really be successful, a husband and a wife must work together as a team. When there is teamwork in a marriage, a husband and wife are like a pilot and copilot with the same flight plan. Even when challenges arise, each spouse thinks in terms of “we” rather than “me.”

BIBLE PRINCIPLE:

  • Matthew 19:6. - “They are no longer two, but one flesh.”
In the light of the above scripture, it is very important for families to know that Marriage is not a one person’s business/ act, as it takes two to tangle. Thus Husband and wife must work together as team not as opponent to make their marriage successful.
  • Ecclesiastes chapter 4:9-13 really highlight the advantages that comes with couples working as team, it says:

Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their hard work. 10 For if one of them falls, the other can help his partner up. But what will happen to the one who falls with no one to help him up? 11 Moreover, if two lie down together, they will stay warm, but how can just one keep warm? 12 And someone may overpower one alone, but two together can take a stand against him. And a threefold cord cannot quickly be torn apart.

  • Philippians 2:3, 4.- Look out not only for your own interests, but also for the interests of others.”

Adhering to the above scriptural principles will help husbands and wives to build a lasting TEAM in their marriages as that is another KEY to a happy and a successful family.

WHY IS TEAMWORK SO IMPORTANT IN THE MARRIAGE?

When a conflict arises, a husband and wife who are not a team will tend to attack each other rather than the problem. Minor issues will turn into major obstacles.
Teamwork is the essence of marriage. If a husband and a wife are not team, they would be roommates instead of marriage mates, i.e. two people who live together but who aren’t on the same page when it comes to important decisions or matters.

To be a great team member, ask yourself these self-test questions….

  • Do I view the money I earn as “all mine”?
  • To relax fully, do I need to be away from my spouse?
  • Do I keep my distance from my spouse’s relatives, even though he or she is close to them?
  • Do I take major decisions without discoursing it with my spouse?
  • Do I support my spouse even when it is not too okay with me?

DISCUSS WITH YOUR SPOUSE

  • In what aspect(s) of our marriage do we work well as a team?
  • In what aspect(s) could we improve?
  • What steps can we take to improve our spirit of teamwork?

CALL FOR ACTION/WHAT TO DO!

  • Instead of thinking, ‘How can I win?’ think ‘How can we both win?’
  • Forget about who is right and who is wrong. That isn’t as important as having peace and unity in your marriage.

YES! TEAM WORK IS INDEED A SECRET TO A SUCCESSFUL/ HAPPY FAMILY

Teamwork is really important in a marriage. I have learned one thing and it's that 'don't blame your partner when an issue arises but blame the issue and solve it together' and I have been putting it into action in my marriage and God has been helping us.
Thanks, Javalord. I am with you.
