My entry for the #amazingnature contest hosted by @adalger
March 2020 - #01

๐Ÿค—
I spotted this little Porcupine last Winter in my friend's yard near the garage door when I arrived.

(Erethizon dorsatum)

Porcupines have very few predators and I can truly see why that is.
They have an amazing way of protecting themselves.
They have 30,000 quills (spines) that are 2-4 inches long.

It's not uncommon for domestic dogs to get into trouble and get so badly quilled it requires the help from a veterinarian to tediously remove them. The quills are barbed.
Veterinarians often use sedation to keep the dogs comfortable during the removal process.

Porcupines don't hibernate in the Winter but will stay in and near their dens in bad weather. They eat the bark on coniferous trees and for the most part they are nocturnal.

Prickly amazing creatures they truly are and harmless left untouched.

They have soo much fur on them ! I wonder if you can keep them as pets like cats to cuddle them, hahaha ^^ .. I by the way noticed that nearly none of your posts is posted into communities, also you used the #photography, the #ocd and #amazingnature tags a lot. Are you aware already of how those communities work ? If you want I can explain them to you ;) .. I wish you a great weekend ahead !

A pet ..๐Ÿค”. Interesting . I hadn't thought of it. I'm thinking my cat would probably not approve ๐Ÿ˜.
Thank you @adalger..!!!!!
I'm trying to understand how to post to a community and have it appear on my blog.
I am currently going through Steemit. beta but am going to perhaps start using eSteem or Steampeak.

Hey there @annephilbrick ^^

Haha, yeah, cats probably would not like that ;) .. I would suggest SteemPeak for you. I am also a big fan of it and really a lot of people like and use it too.

If you are writing a post via SteemPeak there appears a runner on the upper left side "rite a new post in ____ ". Here you can either select "Your Blog" or any community that you joined, for example the "Amazing Nature" or the "Photograohy" or the "Cat Photos". This post will then automatically will be put into that community. It is really easy, but you have to join the community before that ... once the post is published you can select the options, next to where the upvotes and comments are shown and click on "Add to Blog" .. This will put the exactly same post into your blog too. Then you have it in the community and in the blog and it is one and the same post

I hope this could help you a bit ;)

Best wishes,
Adalger

Thank You !!!
@brittandjosie
Their quills are their defense.
The Porcupine was definitely concerned about me being so close and was ready to defend itself if need be.
They won't come at you as in to attack. The will walk off and keep their back and tail towad their potential predator. They swing their powerful tail with it's many quills. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ฏ๐Ÿฆ”
They are pretty docile. They make no deliberate intention to engage. Only if threatened.

That porcupine is cute, almost looks cuddly between the spikes, very different to the African porcupine.

@joanstewart
I think they are cute too. I have tried cuddling one...yet ๐Ÿ˜Š.
I have only seen pictures of the African Porcupines . They are truly so very different looking and most amazing.

Howdy annephilbrick! So if you try to pick one up you'll get lots of spikes stuck in your hands? They look so cute though!
