The Federal Aviation Administration has recognized the Prime Air Amazon's arm as an official "air carrier", marking the historic emergence of Amazon drone needs.

This position allows Amazon to initiate commercial drone delivery to the U.S. Under the experimental system that allows small delivery drones to fly blind. It is unclear where and when they will start.

"This certification is an important step forward for Prime Air and demonstrates FAA's confidence in Amazon's administrative and security services for independent airline delivery service that will deliver packages to our customers worldwide," Amazon Prime Air VP David Carbon said in a statement. "We will continue to improve and improve our technology to fully integrate the delivery drones in the airspace, and work closely with the FAA and other regulators around the world to achieve our 30-minute delivery vision."

Other companies including Alphabet and UPS are developing their own drone delivery systems and are approved by the same FAA. The arm of the Alphabet's Wing increased its drone-driven delivery during the epidemic

Bloomberg reported that "normal delivery is likely to be years away" from Amazon due to additional regulatory barriers.

Here’s a full statement from the FAA:

On August 29, the FAA issued Amazon Prime Air a Part 135 air carrier certificate using unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). Amazon Prime Air’s concept uses autonomous UAS to safely and efficiently deliver packages to customers.

The FAA’s role is to ensure that any UAS operation is performed safely. The FAA supports innovation that is beneficial to the public, especially during a health or weather-related crisis.

Amazon unveiled its latest drone design in June 2019: a complete electric drone capable of flying up to 15 miles and delivering packages under five pounds in less than 30 minutes.

Amazon drone efforts are back in 2013 when Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos unveiled plans for delivery of drones in 60 minutes. But seven years later the company is yet to officially launch a comprehensive commercial delivery drone service, conducting fewer tests at the moment.

Business Insider reported in June that Amazon was preparing to launch Prime Air in limited trials this month after long delays, internal disputes, and seized controls.

In March, Carbon, a former Boeing exec, took over as Amazon Prime Air VP and replaced Amazon exec Gur Kimchi, who had led the company's Prime Air for seven years.
