Wikileaks Publishes - Amazon Atlas


Wikileaks has been teasing a new leak for several days now with the hash:

#QuestOfRandomClues.


Steemian @fortified has been one of the leading researchers decoding the cryptic clues in recent days. Skillfully deciphering the many cryptic tweets by the whistleblower organization we were pointed to numerous data centers across the US and abroad.

Just after 1pm UTC on October 11th 2018 Wikileaks began a series of tweets which included two GIFs. The first began with a black and white image that with the words:

MythicAirplanes- (morphing into) - ThemiscyraPlain


Twitter users were quick to point out that Themiscyra Plain was a reference to a place north of Pontus in ancient Greece. Legend has it that this was home to the Amazon.

Mythic Airplanes may also be a reference to the CIA's long history of using airline companies as fronts. See Air Asia / Air America network.

Right away it became apparent that the relationship between Amazon and the CIA would likely be the focus of the new publication(s).

In recent years it's been revealed that Amazon has a $600 million contract with the CIA to provide cloud services for the agency.

In a subsequent tweet by the Wikileaks Twitter account a map of Virginia, home of the CIA, was tweeted out with the locations of dozens of secret Amazon data centers. The data centers are concentrated heavily in the region but Amazon has kept this fact under wraps by using pseudonyms like "Vandalay Industries" as cover.

For example, at its IAD77 data center, the document states that “Amazon is known as ‘Vandalay Industries’ on badges and all correspondence with building manager”.

Amazon is also a front runner for a $10 billion dollar contract to provide the same cloud services to the Department of Defence.

Cloud Centralization


Perhaps one of the most revealing elements in the release is the centralization of cloud data controlled by a very small number of tech companies.

While one of the benefits of the cloud is the potential to increase reliability through geographic distribution of computing resources, cloud infrastructure is remarkably centralised in terms of legal control. Just a few companies and their subsidiaries run the majority of cloud computing infrastructure around the world. Of these, Amazon is the largest by far, with recent market research showing that Amazon accounts for 34% of the cloud infrastructure services market.


Along with the 2015 document released by Wikileaks, an interactive map which includes the locations of Amazon's data centers has also been provided.

    It's going to be very interesting to see how this evolves and who is implicated in these programs (other than Amazon itself). I have read @fortified's last two pieces on this topic, and am amazed at the amount of deciphering that has taken place, to uncover this important information that affects the entire globe!

    Very interesting publication and in a very recent tweet Wikileaks has announced their own cloud service - https://wikileaks.cloud/ - as reported on by @fortified. A DD on the various data centers could be a very interesting research challenge which was suggested by fortified as well.
