Parque del Este officially known as Generalissimo Francisco de Miranda Park is also popularly called the East Park. It is a recreational park for the public which was developed in honor of a national hero of Venezuela. The park is situated in Venezuela's metropolitan city of Caracas's Sucre Municipality. It covers an expanse of around eighty-two hectares and was opened back in the year 1961. Since then it has been one of the most important attractions of the city which witnesses a number of tourists each year.
The designers who designed the park were Roberto Burle Marx and his two associates named John Stoddart and Fernando Tabora. Parque del Este is situated exactly outside the Miranda station Line 1 of the metro of Caracas which was formerly known as the East Park. East Park is maintained and managed by INPARQUES (the National Parks Institute), a renowned agency working under the Ministry of Popular Power for the Environment. There are 3 differently designed regions that the park combines - The first one is a landscaped forested area with dense vegetation boasting meandering pathways, the next one is an open field with lush green grass flaunting an undulating and gentle topography, while the last one being a set of paved gardens with water works and neatly tiled murals.
The park features a zoo that boasts a rich variety of animals like jaguars, squirrels, ocelots, opossums, monkeys, capybaras, sloths and many others. There are a variety of birds including a large variety of parrots including the yellow-shouldered ones, white heron, blue heron, yellow macaw, tinamou, gonzalito, caricare, blue macaw, kind egret, barn owls, north guacharaca, king zamuro (vulture), red-billed toucan, scarlet macaw, and helmeted curassow. There is also an ample number of reptiles like anacondas and crocodiles featured in the park.
Another attraction of the park is the Humboldt Planetarium, the construction of which began back in the year 1959 on January 15th. The planetarium is a designer work by a renowned Venezuelan architect named Carlos Guinand Sandoz. The place was inaugurated back in the year 1961 on 24 July. The facilities of the Humboldt Planetarium includes a Zeiss planetarium projector as well as a twenty-meter designer dome. The mission of this planetarium is establishing knowledge in science related to astronomy and further making it available to the general masses. It promoted knowledge in all the various scientific levels of education.
