AMD Radeon technologies in the Samsung mobile chip GPUs

Samsung and AMD have announced they have signed a multi-year strategic partnership focused on developing Samsung's low-power utra video solutions SoCs, focusing on AMD Radeon technologies.

Specifically, AMD will license the custom graphic IP based on the RDNA architecture to Samsung, announced at the opening keynote of the Computex in Taipei, for use on mobile devices, including smartphones and other products to complete the AMD product offer. Therefore, in fact, we will see Samsung's SoCs that will integrate the GPU architecture of the Navi family, presumably with an implementation different from the one developed for the desktop sector.

Samsung will pay AMD a license and royalties to use its own technology. For both companies, this is a very important agreement: AMD will expand its business activity in the semi-custom solutions sector, making better use of the fruits of the intellectual properties developed over the past few years.

On the other hand, for Samsung, access to AMD's graphics technologies will enable Exynos family solutions of the next generation to be equipped with a GPU component of the next generation. The information included in the joint press release suggests that in this sector, in addition to access to the recently presented RDNA architecture, there is the use of intellectual property held by AMD in the middle of the agreement. Thus, thanks to the license to use AMD's GPU patents, Samsung can take advantage of both an AMD GPU architecture and protect itself from third-party claims.
