A friend of mine just send a photo of a young man, a United States citizen, voting in his first presidential election. I met him, briefly, and I'd guess he's either in his late teens or early 20s.
We did not talk about Donald Trump, Joe Biden, or any other political candidates currently running for office.
Rather, we talked about how the American Founding was the greatest anti-slavery movement in human history, to which nothing else compares.
We discussed how, at the time of the American Founding—while black slave owners in Africa were scheming to expand the slave trade—white slave owners in North America were strategizing to end the slave trade, which they did shortly later, and the institution of slavery itself, which they would do within four score and seven years by way of a terrible war.
This young American fell in love with his country, with the principles upon which it was founded, and with those who have dedicated themselves to upholding those principles, best they can.
This young man also happens to have dark skin color.
Today he voted for the first time in his life. And, based on how he voted, it seems he does not like those who denounce America as inherently immoral, racist, or unjust. This young man, it appears, thinks America is fundamentally good (though not perfect) and is looking for opportunities to make it better, not worse; freer, not more regulated; more prosperous, not poorer; more just, not more unjust; more equal under the laws, not more tribal; more constitutional, not more progressive.
