Here's why, "The police and the fire department are Socialist; so, why are you afraid of socialism?" is a dumb argument.

First of all: basic logic. I can always counter with, "Well, your shoes, clothes, the roof over your head and the food in your stomach all came from capitalism; so, why are you afraid of more capitalism?" makes the same sense with the advantage of not being a stupid argument.

Second of all, really, which of those components of supposed American socialism are exemplars of a system run well? A third of people under the age of 35 think that we should completely abolish the police and even more think that we should defund the police. Are any of the BLM supports gonna point to police as an example where socialism is working? The roads? You might try (and fail) to argue that socialism is the only way that we can have roads; but, is that really something that you're going to hold on a pedestal as something that we're getting right? Are our courts your idea of something done right? Our military? If your argument is that we should do what works, your best shot is to say that the government should only handle the fire department and we already have volunteer fire response units.

Third of all, no serious economist argues for the state to take over supplying certain things on the basis of wants or needs. I mean, access to food is our most basic need; but, anybody with a tiny understanding of history knows that every time we tried to have the government handle food production, we ended up with millions starving to death. Limited government libertarians (also known as 'road socialists') make arguments for the state to handle certain things on a completely pragmatic basis. Milton Friedman argued for the state to handle lighthouses because there's no way to prevent people who didn't pay from seeing the light. Again, I disagree with Friedman; but, that's a better argument than "I want it."
