Introducing Myself: From Buying 500 Bitcoins At $3 In 2011 To Today.... Here's My Story.

in anarchism •  8 years ago

Hello Steemit Community!

I must say I am proud to be part of such an innovative and creative group of people. We are the pioneers leading the way into uncharted lands, fighting strange beasts,(hackers) paving new roads, settling new lands, taming the unfettered wilderness. We are the crazy ones and here's to us!

I have always been an introverted and highly intellectual type. I'm the kid who prefers to hang out in the library consuming the philosophy section over socializing in the cafeteria or in the crowded halls. I assume many of us are like that here.

I've always been attracted to novelty and profundity. I seem to always be in search of world-shattering, big-picture, paradigm-shifting ideas. So here I am.

Bitcoin and the blockchain technology that underlies it is certainly a world-changing paradigm-shift of an idea. I see it as a shift from the age of debt-based, fiat economies, dependent upon a fundamentally fraudulent fractional-reserve banking system, into a new golden age of sound-money based, decentralized, self-organizing free economies that run smoothly and efficiently without the need for a trusted central authority to police and control the network. And I was drawn to this beautiful idea the moment I heard about it in June 2011.

I first heard the word "Bitcoin" spoken in a YouTube video on a quite popular philosophy Youtube Channel. It was very recent after a large sum of Bitcoin had been stolen from someone's computer and the price had crashed from an all-time high of $32 down to $2. The youtuber was arguing that the theft did not prove that Bitcoin was dead, but instead it proved that Bitcoin had value, as thieves only want to steal things that have value.

I agreed with the argument the youtuber was making, and reasoned further that not only did Bitcoin have value, but it was actually twice as valuable as the US Dollar if the price was $2. I proceeded to do quite a bit of research, I read the White Paper and started interacting on the Bitcoin Talk Forum, and convinced myself to invest.

A few months later I earned a large bonus from work, so I decided to take $1500 of that and put it into Bitcoin. The process was not easy. I had to use a site called Dwolla to send money from my bank account, which took about a week or so, and then I sent the money from Dwolla to an exchange called TradeHill (something about Mt. Gox didn't sit right with me, though it was the biggest and nicest exchange around at the time)

The price was around $3 per Bitcoin and I got about 500 Bitcoins for my $1500.

(a screenshot from a wallet still on my computer, which I believe I used as a transition wallet to transfer the Bitcoin from my TradeHill account to my cold storage wallet)

Then I decided to buy a few of those nice Casascius coins to show off to my friends. I bought one 25 BTC one, and 10 single BTC ones. The site only took Bitcoin so I paid in Bitcoin, and even had an email conversation with Mike who made them.

Then I transferred the remaining Bitcoins into a secure USB drive which I encrypted, and saved on a brand new Bitcoin wallet that I created on an Ubuntu Live CD on a computer that was not connected to the internet to create my unhackable cold storage wallet. And then I created two copies, on two separate encrypted USB drives, and I kept one in my safe and the other in a close friend's safe.

My Bitcoins were as secure as I could possibly make them, now all I had to do was wait.

Well I waited for what seemed like forever. The price barely moved. An entire year later I had almost completely forgotten about Bitcoin, the sparkle and shine had faded, and I was beaten down and worn out by conversation after conversation with skeptical friends and family and internet people telling me Bitcoin was a Ponzi scheme and was dead, etc. etc.

And then my best friend decided he was going to buy a motorcycle. And then my parents decided to buy a motorcycle, and suddenly all I could think about was how bad I wanted a motorcycle. I was watching youtube videos about motorcycles and browsing craigslist for motorcycles, and then I found it: An all black on black Kawasaki Ninja 250, barely ridden, virtually brand new, on sale on craigslist for $3000. The perfect first bike.

After an entire year of waiting, sometime in 2012 the price had risen to $6 per Bitcoin, and I sold out.

Yes, just one year after making arguably the best decision I've ever made in my life by purchasing 500 Bitcoins when they were only $3, I followed that up by quickly making arguably the worst decision I've ever made in my life by selling all of them when they were only $6.

I had doubled my money, so it wasn't a bad investment in my eyes. It isn't every day that you flip an investment in less than a year, plus I needed that motorcycle soooo bad.

It was not long thereafter that Bitcoin hit $20 and I started to get a little worried. When it hit $40 I was flipping all the way out. I remember calling several of my friends and family members when the price was at $40 and telling them how I was feeling.

It was mixture of getting punched in the stomach and getting kicked in the balls. That's how it felt. Like I wanted to throw up but couldn't.

By the time the price hit $200 I was already numb to the pain. I had stopped doing the math months ago. If I didn't think about it, I didn't have to deal with the reality that I had essentially thrown away $100,000. When the price hit $1200, the idea that I would have held out to that point was a pretty far stretch to me anyway. If had held out, I would of had about $600,000 and I'd be half a millionaire off of a $1500 investment, but who are we kidding? I'd have sold at some point along the way.

It's a sad story, but at the end of the day, I doubled my investment, and I still have these to show for it:

I consider my experience a valuable lesson in Bitcoin. My investment strategy is now very different. It goes like this: Buy low, and buy high. When the price of Bitcoin is low, I buy Bitcoin with my fiat money. When the price of Bitcoin is high, I buy nice things with my Bitcoin. I go to NewEgg or Overstock or any store that accepts Bitcoin and I reward myself with a little shopping spree.

But I NEVER under any circumstances, ever convert Bitcoin back into fiat. I've learned my lesson for good the hard way.

Since then I have discovered to things arguably just as exciting as Bitcoin. Those are Ethereum, the decentralized world computer, and Steemit, this here website on which you are reading these words. There is also OpenBazaar and BitNation that have garnered my attention as well. There is just so much happening in this space I am honored to be witness to it!

My hope is that I can apply my skills in some way to assist the revolution that is happening in this space. I am a writer by nature. I plan to write a book about my Bitcoin adventures, but also I plan to write as many informative and helpful posts here on Steemit as I can churn out.

My work comes from the perspective of philosophy and the Austrian School of Economics. I am a Student of Bastiat, Bohm-Bawerk, Menger, Mises, Hayek, Hazlitt, and Rothbard, which I think illuminates some key insights about the inner workings and economics behind why Bitcoin and the Crypto space is working the way it is. (beautifully)

If you're into philosophy, and Austrian Economics, and Libertarianism, and Anarchism I invite you to follow me as I plan to pump out some quality content on a consistent basis! Glad to be part of the community!

Hey man - I know you meant the "old" school of Austrian economics, but have you heard of the "economy of the common good" which is also an austrian theory - few years old now and basically an economic concept that looks at the value of an enterprise measured by its bonus for the common good, instead of the current system which sets the financial success as basis for profitability. The theory is (hopefully) getting really successful right now in countries like Portugal and Spain who will supposedly be the next victims of the ECB. I made a little article here about it as material in english is hard to find:

https://steemit.com/life/@krassvs/change-everything-want-to-change-the-status-quo-you-are-not-alone

Wow.... amazing story you got man. I can't believe you sold at 6, but then again who wouldn't... heat of the moment sorta thing eh?? Any smart investor working with stocks woulda called that a GOOD move but apparently Crypto-currencies can't be viewed like that. It's a whole different game(I don't needa tell you that though!)

I like your strategy. Don't mind me if I steal it right?

"But I NEVER under any circumstances, ever convert Bitcoin back into fiat. I've learned my lesson for good the hard way."

Anyways, I look forward to reading more of your bitcoin adventures.. I wish you luck attracting dem whales!

BRING IT ON WHALES

By all means, if more than just myself can learn from my mistakes I call that a win. I plan on writing a post dedicated to an explanation of that strategy soon. Good to meet you! And lure them whales this way!

From Buying 500 Bitcoins At $3 In 2011

At first I was like... you lucky bastard!! Then I read that you sold out at $6... Damn, I'm sorry man. But it was anyone's guess where bitcoin was going back then. You still doubled your investment, and it's still not as bad as the dude who spent 10K BTC on fucking pizza.

I sorta felt the same way last week. I purchased Steem with my BTC when it was $0.50, and sold out at $1.20 right before it went up to $4.50.... I not only regretted selling out early but also only using a tiny amount of my BTC that I could have easily tripled or quadrupled. And as luck would have it I got greedy and put in a LOT more BTC at $4.00 and now the Steem price is around $3.30....

Oh well, if I learned anything from bitcoin this is also a game of patience.

Good luck! I've been stocking up in bitcoin for the last 3 years, most of my net worth is in bitcoin at the moment. I'm hoping there's another sharp rally like the good old days

I feel so sorry for you. But at the same time - it is only money :) You are still here alive and well and prospering in so many ways.

Good luck in all your current and future endeavours.

Legendary early adopter bitcoin story. I don't think anyone thought when it went to $6 that it would end up where it is today. Great writing style, I will be watching. Wish I had mega voting power for this post!

Thanks! I truly appreciate the kind words! You know, I've been looking at those tiny homes. I have a friend that is building one in his back yard which he is planning on renting out. So cool!

Excited to see where Steemit takes you. Thank you for sharing and welcome!

Thanks it's good to be here!

Fantastic read and you should be proud of yourself. Not many people knew about Bitcoin at that time and you had the balls to invest allot of money in something that was pretty unsure back then.

Doubling your money is/was good investing, because its simply not that easy to double your money. If everybody could do it we all be millionairs.

I hope the motorcycle you bought with your profits brought you many nice memories, because that is something even bitcoin can't buy.

You should have posted this 8 hours ago. This post would make a grand during peak hours. I liked the story though, you're a good writer. You'll do good on this website but it takes some practice.

Thanks for the tip! You're right, I'm brand new to this site and I didn't even think of the timing of posting this...

You've learned your lesson, so forget motorcycles for now - STEEM is the wild ride you want to be on!

yes, it must be a bitter memory. But if I can ease you a bit, I head worst stories, one of a person who purchased a pizza for 10 000 BTC, when they were worthless, another of a guy who paid 1500 BTC for a BNC ( bouncer for IRC). The second story I got it from the guys mouth, the first I don't know if it is a urban legend or if it actually happened. More opportunities will come along your way.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

That pizza story is definitely not a legend, it really happened. It's now a Bitcoin Holiday! May 22nd is Bitcoin Pizza day!

Wow, that is one expensive pizza, a 6 million dollar pizza, better be jumbo. Man, it's funny and sad at the same time.

Yeah i feel you very well my friend.
I had the same adventure, my wallet was "full" as my friend said, i had about 430 bitcoins there.
But price got a little bit up,then i sold them :( Well... but we cannot change it, lesson learned ;)

I have a similar story that involves Bitcoin and motorbikes. I remember sitting at my kitchen table back in 2011 counting the $2,000 I got for selling one of my vintage Lambretta scooters. I had known somewhat about Bitcoin by then and ask my wife if I should put it all into Bitcoin. She said, "sure, why not?" I knew the price would go nuts one day but unfortunately I decided that it was too risky for the time being. Fortunately when Ethereum popped up on the radar I invested a little in the pre-sale. Motorcycles are still my weakness though.

Pre-sale ethereum! Oh man I hope you bought a lot!

Not a lot but enough to make things interesting. Just a few months ago someone stuck a Bitcoin ATM machine right in front of my house. I can wake up every day and look at it through the store window and kick myself. haha I still keep buying BTC and still think that this is only the beginning to all this.

It is humanly impossible to hold that long. The only lucky ones are those who had completely forgotten about their purchases and then remembered on the news. Anyway, good luck with Steemit! And don't quit it early. :)

nice to meet you @kierkeguardian i follow you 8]

I think alot of people have been there in crypto if only i didnt sell good luck with everything going forward.
here is my little story https://steemit.com/money/@mike38/my-experiences-with-btc-and-crypto
thanks for your post.
mike38

Cool story, bro. And I don't mean that sarcastically.

nice too meet you, you seem like a pure spirit

Thanks man! Nice to meet you too!

Nice article, you articulate your view rather well. When steem came on I had to take some SBD out because it was hard for me to believe it was real money, so I paid myself $50 into my bank to confirm. I wouldn't be too disheartened about your loss, you made an investment and made 100% you can't ask for more. I'm still concerned about some major central bank hack to the crypto's, it's starting to become a real threat and I don't see them standing back and watching it all happen. You're probably the blogger that best match my views atm. Interested in what else you got to say

I don't think they could ever "hack" bitcoin, but I am a bit concerned about what that guy Craig Wright is up to with his super computer and his claiming copyrights and claiming he is Satoshi... I think Mike Hearn, Craig Wright, and honestly Gavin Andresen (because he created both of them) are examples of central bankers (or whoever) attempting to infiltrate and destroy Bitcoin by sending in saboteurs. but I don't think any of their attempts will work in the end. crypto is here to stay

Wow great story! I agree Ethereum and Steem are the most innovative currencies after bitcoin.

"My work comes from the perspective of philosophy and the Austrian School of Economics." We would get along real well. Looking forward to reading more.

Thanks for sharing your story. Now you get the same opportunity all over again with the hard lesson already learned.

Oh, and I have beard-envy.

excellent. good job. @kierkeguardian

Don't feel bad. Just watch that movie back to the future.

Great article! and you have a crazy and awesome story. Looking forward to reading more of your articles about philosophy and Austrian Economics! Feel free to follow back as I will be posting news about the Economy and Anarchism as well!

done!

Very refreshing read. Now i know i'm not alone in my investment misery. I missed out on almost 2 million USD , the only difference was that it wasn't bitcoin in my case, but litecoin... Now i'm all in bitcoin, and don't plan to sell for decade or so. So far i'm holding for 2 years almost !!

Ey man. That story is painful. When I read the title I thought I was going to read that Bitcoin made you a billionair. Sad to read that was not the case. Buy ey, Steemit is something new and revolutionary. Maybe you have your second chance now to become rich. I wish you all the luck.

Steemit! wooooo buy and stake Cryptographic Triangles! you'll know why

This time around with Steemit, you won't be able to cash out entirely before 2 years! Steemit is your nanny asset manager.

Probably a good thing!

Wow what a journey. I agree it would have been near impossible to hold onto 500 Bitcoin until it hit $1200.00 you would surely have sold them way before that. :)

For sure I would have! But not with my new investment strategy. ; ) HODL!

Steem & Ethereum is waiting for you dear .. life has taught you a lesson .. now cash it well ... :)

Thanks for sharing. I hope you do well in the new Bitcoin. Good luck and great post.

I know the feeling of making a wrong decision later regret it big time. Let's just hope steemit will be bigger than Bitcoin. Fingers crossed.

Nice! I love reading stuff like this since I'm so new to crypto currency. The insight is much appreciated. :)

Great article man. We're definitely in good company with you around. Hope to see you on at the moon landing

If you have time. Very interested to know your opinion on which of the top cryptos you think are worth investing in. At the moment I'm spread fairly evenly between BTC/LTC/ETH/STEEM

Cheers

Those would be my top 4 as well! We think alike!

Thanks man. Most my stuff is on them and I've a tiny bit on XRP and BitShares

interesting story, beardman ;) i like profit traders stories)

At least you can say at one point in a revolutionary history of technology, you were in with 5oo Bitcoins, not many people can say that and you still made profit! Awesome story!

Similar to your situation, I was close to banking my XMR which peaked $2 last week, as I purchased most at $.25 and felt it was worth it. And yet, I decided not to because I'm confident XMR will hit the hundreds in the coming years. What are your thoughts on XMR as becoming the next BTC?

Steemit Quotes Of The Day –
Sometimes life is tough. 諦めない

Btw i upvote your post because it is a great content :)

Great post, unfortunate story, still, Ethereum looks really solid thanks to great leadership and dev team.

Nice article, i really want to know more about austrian economy from you..

I'm new to steemit, and I'd really like to follow you and your future posts. Do you know of a way to follow other than remembering your username? Nice introduction :-)

You're a legend! I got into cryptocurrency far too late, but it's people like you who have been an inspiration. Of course, I wish I was there when BTC was 3, but I'm not as brave as you are!

There are always ups and downs, and I'm glad you took it in your stride. Either way, you lost nothing getting in at $3!

I'm definitely following you, I consider myself a libertarian. Glad to have you hear. :)

Thanks for the encouraging words and thanks for following! Glad to meet a fellow Libertarian! I'll try to do you proud!

I had a similar experience (though not at this level) with Amazon stock. All we can do at this point is learn from the past. I only realized recently what I should have done. If I was going to sell, sell off as much to get my money back. In your case, you could have sold $1500 worth and then held the rest. If they ever went to zero, you still didn't loose your $1500. I look at it as an example of diversification implemented. Diversification is a big deal in investing, I've learned. I'd like to share my post about it https://steemit.com/investing/@wrightlabs/diversification-2016-still-the-only-free-lunch-in-investing

good stuff! i think you'd get even more engagement if you included a video #snapstorm

Interesting post... I will be watching your content as I am very interested in economics... I have shared some content you may be interested in... I agree, never never never sell BTC for fiat...

Yeah man I'm already following you for the chakras guide! you rock!

Don't power down

Looks like your done investing.

Not done, but it's a bit sad knowing I'll never own 500 BTC again probably.

Maybe Steemit is your second chance? Time to Power Up!

Very well written article

Its defintely a privilage to be apart of this!!!

I followed you and am looking forward to reading your posts!

Great article. Never regret. There is something to learn from your experience that will make you far more successful now.

My investment strategy is to create value for others. I don't think wealth in the old or new world view is only about buying and selling. Adhering to that philosophy alone can make you a hard cold person, which is the opposite of a libertarian.

A good example your story ;)

Wow! Nice decision you made. It's been good to see that you're one of those people that saw the potential of bitcoin! Hope your journey will continue and will be joining you with that. :)

I bought a T-Shirt for 15 Ethereum now about ~ $200.00... My play on taking wins/selling at a profit now is to pay myself back and play with "house money". In your scenario, selling 250 Bitcoins at $6. You would then have 250 Bitcoin at $0. :-) Hindsight is 20/20 and I learned this some painful lessons in my early 20s during the techbubble of 2000. Thanks for Sharing!

Damn, you could of been a whale now! Crazy how things turn out to be. But as long as there are markets there is money to be made.

that was funny and honest and excellent, I just learnt some things- cant wait for more
