So, from my first post and some discussions, it’s pretty clear we have enough interest to pursue this idea of an event called Octapulco in late October. I will be posting regular updates on the progress of making it happen.
The idea isn’t to over complicate things, but rather to make it as easy as possible for everyone to fit their ideas into the very basic structure.
Octapulco is about becoming familiar with Acapulco - the place, the people and their interests and passions and having fun doing it.
The next step is to get enough of our local community and other participants who are willing to come to put together activities that will be fun and informative.
I’ve set up a website that will be live and functioning shortly. For the next month we can discuss ideas and concepts about what could be done. By the end, though, we have to have a solid idea of what is going to happen. This is going to be an open source gathering, but we still need enough of a plan, that people will know what to expect. So let the discussions begin!
Here are some topics I’d suggest are possible discussions and educational opportunities here:
- Schooling your children the best way
- Why good parenting is so damn important
- Where to get the best food or grow it yourself
- Better ways to good health and healing
- Self defense and self discipline
- Science - what the hell happened?
- Finding a place in Acapulco
- Technology - the possibilities and what we might actually be able to do with it
- Standing on your own two feet. Taking charge of your own life
- Languages and new opportunities
- What do you call fun?
- Activities that expand the mind
- What could be learned from ancient civilizations?
- The vast knowledge that can be tapped from the locals
- The real story of Acapulco
- A better way to organize and build a network of trustworthy people
Sound like something interesting? Maybe you have some suggestions. Let’s hear them!
I will remind everyone as well though. This isn’t set in stone. Putting on any gathering is work. If we work together, it shouldn’t be difficult. “Many hands make light work,” as the saying goes. That is what I’d like to see. If it looks like it will fail to live up to that, or we run out of time, then there is the chance we’ll just have to put it off until next year or if we have to go small, we can do that too! I’m deliberately going to set expectations low and hope to be pleasantly surprised.
Finally, I’d like to talk a little about the time in between this event and Anarchapulco 2018. This is the best time of the year to be in Acapulco. It’s also the worst time of the year to be anywhere in the upper Northern Hemisphere. It’s my hope we can have enough people in Acapulco during this timeframe to start to work on many of the ideas being discussed in the larger community. I’d like to suggest this could be the opportunity for those who have information they are willing to share to meet with those willing to listen and learn - an open source university of the talents, skills, knowledge and passions of those already here, along with those willing to come. And if you are interested in learning, this is the place to be as well. We have some of those people here and we’d welcome new ones, as well.
Acapulco has some interesting opportunities for those who live here and certainly for those who come to visit. One I’d like to outline is the cheap cost of living. It’s very inexpensive. But what’s unique about the winter months is that during Christmas and New Year’s this place gets pretty crowded. Hotel rooms that go from $300 - $800 pesos a night in the summer and fall can easily get $1500 - $3000 pesos a night over the holidays. This gives people who arrive in October a distinct opportunity. Imagine renting a place for $6000 - $8000 pesos a month that you can sublease for a week and recoup your entire cost of your stay! It can be done. Or you could go a bit bigger and rent out the extra space during that high demand period and lower your costs dramatically. And of course that goes for Anarchapulco, too! Have an extra room for cheap? That might be the difference between someone deciding to come on down for the event versus being stuck in a statist hell-hole!
I’m very passionate about opening people’s eyes to a better way. I want to bring like minds together to learn, listen, teach and collaborate. We have the opportunity to change the world. Why not?
Let’s do it!
One last thing: As I promised in the first article, the money collected for these Steemit posts will go toward the expenses of the event and any extra will go to charity for a local orphanage.
