It’s good to be a control freak, they are super aware of their surrounding. Behind every bush lurks danger. So should they be in charge? Hell no. They could not even punch their way out of a paper bag.
Trying to control everything is a sure way to failure. For instance, try regulating your breath. Making a continuous effort to breathe in and out. You will see that breathing will become less smooth. It will only consume extra effort. Best thing is to delegate this task to the autonomic nervous system and you can focus on more important things.
The same goes for the more “advanced” mental processes, like the tip-of-the-tongue phenomena. Better stop thinking about the word, and the right answer will pop up. Start delegating power to unconscious parts of the brain that are better suited for retrieving information.
These are examples of not interfering with mental processes. This is in essence what meditation is all about, letting go! If you want to control each aspect of the mind by conscious effort – it’s a form of centralized control. Its like the Soviet politburo trying to determine how many rolls of toilet paper there has to be produced. When you delegate control to deeper (unconscious) parts in the brain, your mind becomes more decentralized. You have relieved yourself from the task.
Meditation is so powerful because when you stop thinking about an infinite number of things, more mental energy is available. You have more ability to think about the things that really matter. In general, it becomes easier to focus on the big picture.
The transition to decentralization is like the transition from a planned economy to an anarcho-capitalistic economy. The planned economy is the least successful one, because it is still obsessed about toilet paper.
Having a trust in anarchy, is a sign that you’ll probably do well in meditation. You’re less occupied by irrelevant details. Toaists would say that you have mastered the art of “wu-wei.” Which is described in the The Tao Te Ching as non-action. From a political aspect: no imposition of power, having a laissez faire policy.
Fortunately, you don’t have to be statesmen to benefit from wu-wei. According to a 2014 Gallup poll, it is found that the most successful entrepreneurs have the least difficulty delegating power to subordinates. Most entrepreneurs find it hard because the ego might stand in the way. Maybe a workshop on meditation will do the trick?
Given that anarchy requires an absence of fear it is no wonder that we don’t see it often. In other words, anarchy requires spiritual enlightenment on the part of its people. If we want anarchy in society first we must create anarchy in our mind.
