Christie says it may violate someone's religion. Really? What a crock of sh_t! It wouldn't surprise me if Christie is one of them!

The Governor of New Jersey Chris Christie has given his blessing to pedophiles, allowing them to marry and rape minors, as long as they claim its “part of their religion.”

Christie vetoed bill A3091 that was designed to protect children from religious perverts. He cited “concerns for religious traditions” for the veto, claiming that dirty old men should be allowed to get their wicked way with children if they so wish.

In a statement to the media, Christie said;

“I agree that protecting the well-being, dignity, and freedom of minors is vital, but the severe bar this bill creates is not necessary to address the concerns voiced by the bill’s proponents and does not comport with the sensibilities and, in some cases, the religious customs, of the people of this State.”

Christie’s reasoning is flawed. There are no “religious customs” that offer a moral justification for child marriage. In fact, reasonable people can assume that any custom that forces or permits child marriage is in fact immoral.

While Christie did not specify what “religious customs” he was referring to, there are both Muslims and Mormons who believe child marriages, often arranged and even against the will of the minors involved, are appropriate.

Politico reports:

The top sponsor of the measure was Republican Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz, who said at a committee hearing last year that she introduced the bill after hearing “compelling” stories of minors forced into marriages for religious reasons.

Under current New Jersey law, children under 16 can be legally married with parental consent and approval from a sympathetic judge.

As for the legislation Christie vetoed, The New Jersey Law Journal reports: “The bill—sponsored by Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz, R-Union, and Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, D-Mercer—passed both chambers of the Legislature with only token opposition.”

In a statement advocating for the legislation, state Sen. Nellie Pou (D-Passaic) said:

Marriage is a legal contract and it should be reserved for adults It is startling for people to learn that there are many underage marriages happening here in New Jersey. As a state, we have a responsibility to protect our residents, and moral obligation to protect children and this bill takes the necessary steps to do that.

True Jersey notes that opponents of the ban on child marriage worry that pregnant teenagers would be prevented from getting married and their child would be “born out of wedlock.”

Reuters reports that child marriage in the U.S. is not as uncommon as many Americans would like to believe. According to research, almost 250,000 children, the vast majority of them girls, were married in the United States between 2000 and 2010.

Bottom line: There is no moral justification for child marriage. Full stop.

A high profile Republican governor has declined to sign into law, a measure that would have made his state the first to ban child marriage without exception.

Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey and someone who has been a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, said such a ban would conflict with religious customs. He did not specify what religions he was referring to.

Reuters said underage marriage is widespread in the US, where about 170,000 children were wed between 2000 and 2010 in 38 of the 50 states where data was available.

Who's side is this guy on? (the Muslims it looks like. How many Mormans would even live in New Jersey anyway?)

longshot? I'm just as opposed as you are to the notion of Sharia law being shoved down the throats of Americans. However, before any state jurisdiction entertains a proposed ban on teenage marriage, state legislatures need to evaluate both the justness and the integrity of their age of consent laws and address them accordingly. Otherwise, I say that they leave well enough alone with regard to the marriage laws. It was only back in 2013 that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo granted a middle-aged man a full pardon for a 1988 conviction of "statutory rape" after Governor Cuomo found out that the reason for this man's conviction was that this man at the age of 22 had gotten a 15-year-old girl pregnant back in 1988 and that he was now married to that same lady and had been happily so for a quarter of a century. That man's name was Rocco Paciello, and he was no child predator by a long shot.

The problem with "laws" is common sense often does not apply. Lawyers make the laws and profit from debating their relevance. It's a circular illogical system. Trouble is, what would work better? At least in America we have a jury system, but unfortunately juries are seldom taught by our education and judicial systems to exercise their 10th Amendment when necessary. It's up to citizens to know and protect their rights in the face of governmental intrusions.

The title of your article couldn't be any further from the truth. Pedophiles are attracted to prepubescent children. Not to adolescents. If a 22-year-old man marries his 15-year-old girlfriend, it's because the couple wishes to make their relationship legal. However, you cannot go equating that scenario to some 78-year-old man in a trench coat grabbing a 5-year-old toddler from a playground and committing unspeakable acts upon her. You're comparing orange to apples. I say that Governor Chris Christie was right to maintain the status quo. Moreover, the decision on the fate of underage marriage should not be up to the state legislature but rather placed on the election ballot as a proposition for voters decide upon, if it is to be entertained at all. ("Proposition" is the technical term that is used in California whenever voters decide on a law instead of state legislatures, and it appears as a question on an election ballot. I don't know what the exact technical term for it is in New Jersey, but you get the idea.) It's the voters who should decide this matter rather than elected officials, because it will affect many peoples' lives in the event that it becomes law; and if voters decide to maintain the status quo, then so be it. By the way, I agree with you on that quote from President Thomas Jefferson regarding civil disobedience, but I disagree with your reasons for citing that quote in your article.
