A very beautiful animal known as a firefly, which can give off light that is clearly visible at night.
()
There are many wonders to be seen in the animal world, one of which is the flame of a firefly. This is a singular experience, like a handful of dwarf stars thrown from the sky, falling off and floating between grass and thorns. Reported from mnn.com site, here are the facts about fireflies you should know.
- They include beetles, not flies
Fireflies are the nocturnal animals of Lampyridae, a family of insects in the sequence of the Coleoptera beetle, or the winged beetle. Yes, they are really beetles. The family name Lampyridae comes from the Greek word "lampein", which means shining, like a lamp.
- They are reliable alchemists
Fireflies do not actually turn base metals into gold like alchemists, but they create light as if by magic. When a chemical called luciferin in their stomach / tail is combined with oxygen, calcium and adenosine triphosphate, a chemical reaction takes place and produces a spectacular light.
- Fire light genius
The light produced by fireflies is the most efficient light ever made. Nearly 100 percent of the energy in a chemical reaction is emitted as light; as a comparison, the incandescent light bulb only emits 10 percent of the energy as light, the other 90 percent lost as heat.
- They are eccentric teasers
Each species has a specific pattern of blinking light. Male fireflies use this pattern to let females of the same species know that they will be suitable for each other. When a female sees a suitable applicant, she answers with a specific twist of its own. Female fireflies may also use flicker information to decide which males to marry.
- Color Their Lights Like Rainbows
Well, maybe not the entire rainbow spectrum, but the color of their lights varies between yellow, bright red, green and orange
- They illuminate the underground world
While it is true that many insect larvae live underground, baby fireflies overcame them by dividing "neat tricks"; some species emit an underground light. Among some species, even the eggs are luminous. Strange, is not it?
- They have a Strange Diet
Contrary to the portrayal in storybooks that the cute firefly babies bite on flowers, underground larvae are carnivores and feasting on the slimy snails, earthworms and snails. As they grow, some turn to cannibalism and eat other fireflies, but some eat pollen and nectar, and some eat nothing at all during their short lives.
