The Dire Wolf was prehistoric carnivore, and was a real animal!!! It was about the size of the modern grey wolf and was in constant competition for food with the sabre toothed cat. 
The Dire Wolf became extinct because its main prey died out. The reason their prey died out is still up for debate. I thought they were a product of Game of Thrones.
