Build awareness through works

Vhils, a portugal-born artist, made a work in Medan. In his work, Vhils describes the orangutan Tapanuli as a form of concern for the endangered animals.

Currently in North Sumatra, precisely in Batang Toru forest, there is construction work in the form of construction of lakes for power plants in the orangutan habitat center. With only 800 tails, the existence of orangutans is certainly threatened by human intervention in the original habitat of the animal. Not only orangutans, other animals such as Sumatran tiger, stone cat, and sun bear also interfere with the existence of this project.

"Increasing awareness of global issues is the responsibility of artists and activists," said the original artist Alexandre Farto. According to him, artists have a responsibility to balance the pressures that exist in the world through his works.

Vhils is an artist known for his distinctive techniques. He started by sketching with paint on the wall. After that, Vhils will "paint" his work by carving sketches he made using drills, hammers, chisels, and bleach.
