Don't be fooled by its ancient beauty and striking plummage. The Cassowary is known as the world's most dangerous bird and it can disembowel an enemy with its 5" toes with a swift kick that would make Bruce Lee proud. In its ~20 years of captivity, no person has ventured into the pen while the Cassowary roams about.
The Smithsonian went behind the scenes to examine the relationship between the enigmatic bird, which must be kept separate even from other large birds, and its keeper.
