Gajah Sumatera Diambang Kepunahan

Gajah sumatera (Elephas maximus sumatrensis) merupakan hewan mamalia, hewan darat terbesar di dunia saat ini. Namun hewan berberalai tersebut terancam punah di muka bumi.

Di habitat alamnya gajah hidup secara berkelompok dan mejelajah untuk mencari makan. Sering berjalannya waktu, areal atau wilayah jelajah gajah semakin hari semakin sempit karena alih fungsi lahan atau konfersi hutan skala besar dan penebangan liar atau loger akibatnya makanan yang tersedia di hutanpun menipis sehingga gajah terpaksa harus keluar dari koridor jelajahnya demi bertahan hidup mencari makan. konflik antara gajah dengan manusiapun tak dapat dihindari di berbagai daerah di Aceh.

Gajah turun ke pemukiman warga untuk memangsa tanaman penduduk seperti padi, pinang, coklat dan sebagainya dengan cara merusak kebun. Tak jarang juga nanusia jadi korban amukan gajah.

Populasi gajah makin hari makin menurun hal itu disebabkan oleh pemburuan gading untuk diperjual belikan. Tak heran jika ditemukan gajah mati tanpa gading di berbagai wilayah di Aceh. Selain itu hal yang sangat serius menurunnya populasi gajah disebabkan oleh pembukaan hutan menjadi perkebunan skala besar atau tranformasi habitat.

Jika hal itu tidak dihentikan maka gajah sumatera akan punah di muka bumi hanya tinggal nama dan ceriti seperti kisah dinosaurus.

Menurut data yang dirilis WWF Indonesia pada 2017, Gajah Sumatera (Elephas maximus sumatrensis) diprovinsi Aceh berjumlah 475 - 500 individu, Kelompok gajah tersebar di beberapa kantung habibat berbagai wilayah hutan di Aceh (FKGI,at al, 2016).
