animalphotography - ground squirrels in lower Austria

As you might already know i like small animals like hamsters and ground squirrels very much, that's why i visit them very often in summer to get some nice shots and as well to just watch them doing their daily work on the meadow. I visited them several times the last year so i got pictures from spring and summer. Now they are already in their hibernation sleep until the next spring. But i can't wait to see them next spring again.

Because of the growing population of industrial harvested fields the population of the ground squirrel is decreasing. Only in special Areas of Austria and eastern europe you can still find these nice animals. Ground Squirrels can also be found in western Asia. Ground squirrels are very curious animals and if you have enough time to wait several hours they might even be so brave to get as close as some centimeter to you. For food they prefer seeds, carots and vegetables and fruits.

Unfortunately some people feed them with bread and other processed food and some ground squirrels might even die from these kind of food because the yeast can blow up their stomach and explode. But this can happen to all animal that are fed to much with bread and processed food from people that live mostly in the city and don't know that they shouldn't feed these things.
