My Digging Buddy

in animalphotography •  7 years ago

I've been working on a trench for the big garden fence since February. I'm trying to remove the rotted chicken wire that was buried there.

Today I made it to the corner where the rhubarb grows. I kept seeing the mulch just beyond where I was digging popping up and down.

I was about 3' from the corner and had a big pile of loose dirt. I'd noticed a hole coming out of the mulch just above the pile. Then all the sudden I had a visitor. I was so busy watching it run back and forth in the trench, admiring its glossy gray coat, that I forgot I had the camera there. By the time I got it and tried for a photo it had climbed out and into the rhubarb.

So I went back to work. Then the loose dirt in the pile started moving, so I knew it was coming back. i grabbed the camera and got these 2 quick photos before it disappeared.

I know what it is.

What I'm wondering is: Can anyone else identify it from just a nose?

is it a hairless mole :)?

It was a shrew, a relatively beneficial critter. But they have a poisonous bite...

Ooo! A shrew! I've never seen one in real life. I was going to guess vole.

No, it had a lovely glossy gray coat.

possum? altho not sure they dig holes.

Nope, it was tiny, mouse size...

a vole?

No, it was a shrew! And they are a relatively beneficial critter. But don't get bitten by one, they have venom apparently.

I've never even heard of a shrew! Very interesting. That was a pretty big hole for such a little fellow - was it a whole group of them in there?

I don't know, I just saw the one. I would expect there was a litter somewhere, as it is that time of year....
