Ran into this little guy while coming up from a wreck dive. They are know as comb jellies or Ctenophores. Although they look like jellyfish, they are actually in a completely different category of creatures. The major difference between these guys and jellyfish is that this one will not sting you. Ctenophores also display spectacular colors via their iridescent pulsing combs (located along the side of their bodies).
Unfortunately for this guy, a green sea turtle swam by moments after this shot was taken and ate him (how was the turtle able to spot this translucent creature from a distance in the big wide ocean... I don't know). Witnessing this made me realize how vulnerable sea turtles are to eating plastic bags and other similar looking non-biodegradable rubbish floating around in the ocean. Let's be careful to keep are oceans clean.
Aloha!

That is crazy how the turtle can see that in the wide open ocean. I like to spearfish so I know how hard it is to see stuff like that from a distance of course the visibility here in San Diego is not as good as Hawaii that might have something to do with it.

Dude I bet spearfishing in San Diego is intense. Isn't the water pretty chilly over there? I've also heard rumors of frequent great white shark encounters, but idk maybe people were exaggerating.
But Ya I was blown away but the turtle's accuracy. Perhaps seeing us taking pictures of it drew its attention to it...

The water gets cold in the winter you almost always need some type of wetsuit. Right now the water temp is sitting around 59 degrees. I have only heard of great white encounters, I personally have not seen one.
