Spotting Orangutans in the Wild in Borneo, Malaysia

in animalphotography •  7 years ago

Orangutans are 6 times stronger than a human and have amazing speed. And that is one heck of a beard! Oh eeeh... Did you know that orangutans are among the most intelligent primates?! They use a wide variety of sophisticated tools to construct their nests and live in trees most of the time. They have been extensively studied for their behavior. Unfortunately, they are endangered animals so we all have a duty to protect them. Borneo lost more than 100,000 Orangutans from 1999 to 2015 :(

Spotting Orangutans in the wild in Borneo, Malaysia

August 30, 2017. Borneo, Malaysia. Wiped off sweat, drank some water, and adjusted my camera settings. Branches breaking, gasps from people, and I look up. 20 feet away is the gigantic male Orangutan looking at me. Exactly like he is, in this position. We stared at each other for what seemed like forever, as I slowly backed away. But not before taking these photos...

... contrary to popular belief, Orangutans are pretty chill. This guy was just yawning. The total of orangutans I saw was 10 in 2 days, and they were all basking at the attention. They are pretty intelligent, shy, but also playful.

Borneo is one of the best places to see Orangutans in the wild!

In fact, Borneo (and Sumatra) are not only the best place to see orangutans - they are the only places you can see them in the wild. By visiting rehabilitation centers you can help support conservation efforts and protect one of Earth's smartest and most beautiful species. And it for sure provides a memorable encounter!

There are 5 main places to see Orangutans in Borneo:

  • The Kinabatangan River
  • Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre
  • Kubah National Park
  • Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre
  • Lok Kawi Wildlife Park

These aren't gorillas or chimps right?

Amazing. Where in Borneo exactly did you take those pictures?

wow these are my favorite primates. they are so smart and gave a divin aura about them. i hope to visit borneo one day and see then in their natural habitat. ive only seen the sad ones in zoo's

I like it

scenery rarely found in everyday life, perfect...

Awesome pictures of great animals :-)
It's very sad when you think about how many of them lose their life while humans burn down the forests just for getting palm oil.
There should be much more enlightenment work.

We have another species from this. may be the same in the order or class. maybe you will be interested to visit our research station. many other species of flora fauna such as Sumatran Elephants, Sumatran bears, and Sumatran Tigers will be encountered in the wild in "SORAYA" station research.

It's so sad that these amazing creatures are an endangered species today! You have captured such beauty, strength and vulnerability at the same time! Now, I want to be able to see them in their natural habitat one day :)

Rise of the planets of the apes.. Sick shots!!

They're ugly, lol. I've seen a few in the zoo sometime ago. They're quite playful as you pointed out, too. You're really brave going into the wild to capture these forest folks, not with a net or a cage, but with a camera! Good luck with this, you're doing great.

very nice and beautiful you captured these monkeys, they are very intelligent creature and also very interesting

Great photos. It’s amazing that orangutans share 98 percent of-of human genealogy. They are very smart and prefer a solitude life-style.
