Behind Glass

in animalphotography •  7 years ago

What's it like to be on display? Everyone looking and pointing. Camera flashing popping. I wrote several post recently regarding the pro and cons and my personal feeling about zoo's and why they still existing in todays day and age.

I was going through some of the images from that trip for a future article I'm writing and will be posting and came across this one.

Snow Leopard-1.jpg

After some time to reflect and staring at this cat for a while I just can not shake the feeling that zoo's and aquariums are of a by gone area and we no longer need these places as they are today.

Thanks for reading.

Scott

Some zoos I think really have it figured out though and do so much good for animals without impeding on their lives too much like the San Diego zoo. It's a balance because the good work they do takes money but to raise that money you've got to be able to show the public these animals.

I feel you on this, yesterday I saw a Bald Eagle in the wild on was thinking how free it was to do what ever it felt like. I took this picture myself and it was a great feeling seeing it in it's natural habitat.

YESSS!!! From a 21st Century perspective of morals and ethics I agree, wholeheartedly.

And yet! People often cite captive breeding programmes as if they are a good thing, forgetting that if we provide the right environments...IN THE WILD...nature will take care of the rest. So then we ping pong back to conservation and the care of the environment and we are, as the caretaker species on this planet, doing a pretty poor job there too. Every time we destroy a region for it's resources we create knife edge conditions for all the life that previously flourished there.

And so this question you raise @scottdphoto, through your beautifully poignant photograph...does, I feel, raise even more.

is it a cat or tiger???????

Great photogrAphy.

i up voted , resteem and followed
i would to be srong like you .

The best thing I like about this wonderful creation is it's attitude. Awesome click.

Amazing photo :) you're doing very well on here. Congrats

But yeah. Zoos suck. I suppose they do teach us about the animals though.

ON POINT. The white race also hosted human zoos in Africa , in the colonial period. Sad and disgusting. People who enslave animals will have a special place in hell.

Good

Well yeah to think of the zoo it is kind of have both the affects of good & bad in a way !

I captured it in a forest guest house20180219_233050.jpg

Such a difficult one, I hate seeing animals in Zoo's but I do think there are legitimate reasons, especially on the basis that the animals there are rescued and can't be released for some reason!

good pic :)

Scott, yet again you have captured the essence of this moment. The cat looks so bored and fed up with its existence. I could not imagine being a creature with a vast territory being caged in, no matter how good or large the enclosure is, a cell. We know loads about dinosaurs so why do we need to have zoos? My kids could probably tell you more about dinosaurs than most animals living today in zoos.

I realize there is place for some, especially endangered species etc but the majority of the animals kept in zoos are not endangered they are only there to serve the bank balance of the institution they are kept by.

Hope you like mine... Good Luck!

Damn! So beautiful and sad in the same time. My opinion is that wild animals are for wildness.

The photo is amazing.

On one hand I agree with you. But on another when we have so many animals on the verge of extinction even though looking at them in the glass cages or even open zoos. Some of these animals we would not have the chance to see in this time without people taking the time to conserve them and repopulate as the can. I'm torn like you are. It is a shame that it ever had to come to the point that we had to open up sanctuaries and zoos to keep the lifeline around. Just a very sad state that what some people are capable of doing (hunting till we are at a point that we have to open these places)

awesome photography bro...what about contest!!!

I can feel how hard for for these creatures being stuck in that 4 corners of their fence and will not experience the thing we called freedom. Yes, sometimes, we think that it is better for them to be there, especially for the thought of extinction. But do we really need to? It really squeezes my heart. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and this photo. You just captured something that may bring a message to everyone about it.

How sad he seems, he seems to be lonely. I would like to release him to freedom.
I supported you and I followed you, I hope you will come to my page to see and support @lena1

awesome photo but...poor being....

Nice photo

please upvote back my posts. thanks

I love your thoughts, and often those are voiced from our 6 year old when he watches animals in captivity. So raw, it's time for us to change the way we as humans experience other beings around us.

Lovely thought. Sometimes children can state the plain and simple truth.

Completely agree with your mixed feelings.

On the one hand, I can see a positive side in the fact that it contributes to animal welfare and awareness, as well as overall education. My interest in nature was certainly triggered by weekly zoo visits with my dad.

On the other hand, of course, many zoos still have a long way to go when it comes to the right way of taking care of wild animals. There are many that may just not fit into a cage, no matter how big it is. Lions or tigers, for example, just pacing up and down (this being a clear signal of stress).. Hurts to watch

Perfect photograph love this ....you can be my mentor

Great picture. Love the detail in the fur and the look in the eyes.
