An Antarctic Tern on a shipwreck, Guvernøren

in animalphotography •  7 years ago

The Antarctic tern, which you can see is a beautiful small bird that spends some of its time in Antarctica to nest and breed. This place is in Foyn Harbour and the structures you can see in the photo are actually a shipwreck of an old whaling boat called the Guvernøren that caught fire and sunk on Jan 27, 1915.

In order to save the cargo (whale oil, which was around 5050 m3 at the time of her catching fire) they ran it into a shallow bay and attempted to sink it partially by shooting harpoon grenades into her hull. It didn't work and they lost all of the cargo BUT no crew member lost their lives, which is a slight bonus. How did it catch fire? They were partying on the ship celebrating and toasting to the successful whale season and someone bumped a lamp.

What this wreck does provide is a nesting sight for these beautiful birds to gather and do their thing.

What an amazing post. So cute bird. Nice written. Thanks for sharing.

The real impressive thing is: Animals can stand circums. we even can stand for hours without equipment. I'm always impressed during the cold days what an absolute will to survive, no self-pity, no thinking about reputation, no whatever only the pure struggle with mother nature to survive and reproduce. Birds are pretty smart, smarter then most ppl would imagine. I realy adore nature and animals, they are so pure !

They are making use of unwanted space. I guess they are a major partner in the recycling process. Thanks for sharing

very beautiful)

Interesting story! Poor guys, they lost everything including the ship. And even poorer whales. Thanks God whales are safe from hunting nowadays.

Whales are still hunted unfortunately by Japan, Norway, and Iceland.

Beautiful image. Nature is always beautiful
