Spring time on the water around Vancouver Island

in animalphotography •  7 years ago  (edited)

Summer is only just around the corner for the northern hemisphere, which for me has always meant whale watching time. As my job for the past 6 years has been operating logisitics, operations and driving tours for a company that runs out of Victoria, BC on Vancouver Island.

However, this time of year is pretty awesome to be on the water. It is the best time to hang out with Bigg’s Orca or Transients Killer Whales - the mammal eating orca!! My favourites. The reason is the salmon haven’t really started running yet into the San Juan and Gulf Islands, so as a result the Resident orca that hunt the salmon haven’t really came in yet and ‘set up shop’ for the summer. When they aren’t around the other ecotype - Bigg’s orca come in and hunt the area extensively, which is AWESOME!!!

It is quite the amazing sight to see these huge apex predators gentling rip apart a seal or a smaller baleen whale - unless you really, really like seals then I guarantee you won’t enjoy the interaction.

Nice article about orcas @thomasjmitchell.
When summer go on, not only orcas have whaling season. Also season of whaling open for Nothern aboriginal and more than 360 whales will killed &eaten in this year. So sad.

Help to @uberwhales to awake up Steem community and motivy Steem Whales for saving whales animals.

These whales are the greatest symbol of patience and cunning in the marine kingdom.

That they are! I agree. Patience is the biggest thing they have taught me over the years. You will have to come see them for yourself one day soon 😊😊😊

I really enjoyed that post beautiful picture to 👍

What a lovely time to spend some vacation in an island with views of such beautiful creatures. I like how you took a shot on this photo. You can be a great photographer :)

cheers! I am glad you enjoyed the photo and post.

are you in this sea? If yes, encourage. :)

I am. I live on Vancouver island

It's cool :)
