The June Beetle match

Known as Salagubang in the Philippines (June beetle or June bug) with scientific name Phyllopaga, usually live in a mango tree. I remember the crazy times with my childhood friends, we were so young, wild and free. After taking a bath at 10:00 AM, we gather infront of our house and play. Those times, toys and gadgets are not yet trendy. Yet, we are happy playing with the things around us. Playing with "Salagubang" is one of our pastimes and it is famous every summer. We climb mango trees on our school and shake its branches to capture this bugs and sell it to our playmates. We pick the big ones and challenged other kids to have a match, their Salagubang versus ours. We put bubble gum on its back and place them in sideways position. Whoever stands up and carry the opponent wins the game. Just like a cockfight, the defeated bug will be possessed by the winner. I remember we named our bug as Goliath. It won several times and no one matches its strength.

On this era wherein kids are so fanatic with gadgets and expensive toys, I am glad to see that these pastimes are still existing. Filipino kids of the 80's and 90's can relate most to this article. Hope you like it. Thanks and God bless us all.
