Good timing only presents opportunity, it's what you do with it that counts.
The composition you've created is exceptional, the subject is the cat and the post, located very well on the rule of thirds and occupying a fair proportion of the frame with plenty of space to appreciate the surrounding environ.
Your depth of field keeps the subject as the main focal point with the background receding into softening focus with distance, but still containing enough detail to comprehend and appreciate what it contains.
The exposure is very good too: there's a near white and near black point with the majority of values occupying mid-dark to mid-light with a warm yellow/red cast in the hue created by the afternoon sun light, lending a soft contrast and warm, inviting colour cast that suits the subject perfectly. This can be seen by viewing a histogram of the values, most decent image editors have one, I've created one for you in pixlr.com/editor to illustrate these points.
Timing isn't everything, great photo, see if you can find a printer that will do a canvas wrap for a reasonable price. This image would make a fine portrait to hang, I think your Gran would be thrilled with it as a gift.
