Ulat bulu dengan warna kecoklatan ini termasuk spesies Macrothylacia rubi, Ordo: Lapidoptera, famili: Lasiocampidae adalah hewan dengan kelas Insekta. namyn dikalangan petani ulat bulu sebagai hama yang memakan daun -daun hijau terutama pada musim kemarau seperti seperti di kawasa saya saat ini.
Kenapa kita menyebut hewan ini ulat bulu, karena karena seluruh tubuh ditutupi oleh bulu-bulu, bulu yang terdapat merupakan senjata untuk bertahan dari serangan predator. Jika bulu tersentuh kulit akan timbul rasa panas yang sangat menyengat, dan seringkali mengakibatkan bentol-bentol pada kulit, terutama kulit manusia.
