As my hamsters grow older, they become slower and more feeble. It's heart breaking to watch but it also means they are less of an escape risk if I let them out of their cage to run around. I don't like hamster balls because I don't think they are safe unsupervised even in one of those things and they have the potential to get themselves lost under furniture or fall down stairs.
Anyway lately I've been taking them out into the yard to enjoy nature. I don't want the insides of their cages to be the only environment they ever know. They don't move quickly enough that there is any danger they will get away from me and for the most part just seem intensely curious to explore the grassy wonderland I place them in.
The hamster in this series of photos is named George. The other is named Scott and I'll probably photograph him exploring nature too at some point. There's a hamster carrier built into my ebike so I could conceivably take them to explore various interesting locations along the 40 mile bike trail near my house.
Dwarf hamsters are not very affectionate and mainly just seem irritated or scared by human contact. This makes them a less than ideal pet if you want affection. Mostly they are just bought by parents for the same reason as goldfish; They are low maintenance and teach their kids lessons about responsibility for the care of another living being, and how to cope with death.
These critters live 3 years, max. Usually less, perhaps a little over 2 years. Even as a man of 34 it's difficult to watch such small, cute critters grow old and die. However kids are not the only ones who can learn lessons from small creatures about the transience of life. It compels me to spend more time with my elderly parents while they're still around.
Caring for such small delicate pets also has cultivated more patience and gentleness in me. For example if you hold a small critter like these, even small motions of your hand are fast and scary from their perspective. This translates to a lesson in empathy for people who are more timid/fragile and need special care when interacting with them.
Unfortunately this also means that trips in the ebike carrier are probably terrifying experiences for them. Like being abducted into a spacecraft which then accelerates to what, for a hamster, is warp speed. I am unsure of a good solution. Perhaps covering the little window on the carrier so they don't see? Their eyesight is poor anyway but I don't want to scare them if I can help it.
Even a creature which lives only three years at most has great value. It is a living organism, not a toy, so thought must be given to what sort of quality of life it receives. Is is really a life worth living to be cooped up in a cage every day? I don't think so. I want them to be mentally stimulated. I want to expand their horizons during their short time on Earth. I want them to have adventures!
Stay Cozy!
He looks super cute. I'm loving the hamster!)))
Be kind to him and feed him good :D

@alexbeyman,
Seriously I hate rats! Specially most of my country people are suffering by a deadly fever, which is coming from rat pee :D I am not killing them, but the feeling you had while watching this animal, I assure you I can't get it, I see the death by seen them :D
Cheers~

I named my friend's hamsters! One was Vlad :D The other one was Adolf.
It's so cool that you put them in nature. I've seen some hamsters grow and die in captivity that it's sad. The cage is all that they know and their world is far from what their genes call for. <3 Props to you for being so kind and patient with them. I wish I can get a hamster later in life when I have enough resources be able to keep them.

My first hamster was named Megafucker Supreme. Hamsters naturally dwell in deserts so actually grassy terrain still isn't something they are genetically suited for. What's your situation currently, that you cannot support a hamster? (If you don't mind my asking)

Truly beautiful hamster, I've only had one called "Hansko Ratovich" had him since it was a pinky little thing without hairs.
They brought many memories to read and see the images so i will share some photos ahahah.

😂😂😂😂 I've always loved putting some original names on pets. It's more conventionally acceptable and you get to appreciate them more. Or at least that's my experience.
That's... ok, I didn't know that, nice piece of information, lol. But I guess that it's better than their cage anyway :) And it's letting their genes explore something else haha :D Like we would be if we were taken to Mars.
Hmmm, it's hard to describe. I earn around 150 USD a month (through Steemit), but I'm saving a lot on Steemit to be able to grow my account. I need to be able to earn 300 USD a month if I'm going to live independently in another country.
Currently, I'm in Venezuela. Things are cheap, so I can live with 40 USD a month. It's good, but I'm planning on moving because there is a great scarcity which affects medicine, imported goods and many essential products. Animal food is particularly expensive (imported prices) and scarce, so even if I had the money I couldn't go buy it.
It's really hard to explain it all (and a long topic), but it's more about the whole situation than the particular lack of resources. I have many, many pending expenses that I've been delaying to save, but I'll have to spend and if I include hamster-keeping, I think it'll be very over the limit of my budget. :(
If you want to read more about my situation, I wrote yesterday about it on this post.
I'm working on my situation, so you don't need to help, I'm getting it solved. :) Although I do appreciate every tiny push I get toward the goal line.

Those are all bid bots 😂 From all my posts I only get around 1.5 SBD if lucky and like 3 SP, maybe 4 or 5 if I'm lucky. The rest of the SBD is only so that I can cover the next week of bid bots.
I use bid bots to grow quicker. I've tried without them and SP grows much slower. I get a bit less SBD, but much more SP.
I get tiny organic votes (maybe because I spend my time with other planktons) and the few dolphins that do upvote me usually sum up to $3 (including busy.pay). The rest is fluff, sugar cotton, illusion and a little SP.
Cute hamster post turned into finance :(

What a cute little fella! It's nice to give them some freedom to explore new things just like you do! Life in a cage isn't what living creatures are meant for. When I had parrots some years ago, I used to let them out in the house. In time they were going back to their cage on their own when they get tired of exploring the room. :)

What a very nice way to teach a lesson. We all do need to be more patient, and to take care around others that may be a little more timid than us, and yes it is a reminder that parents do also age, and we should not let our lives get to caught up by things that could wait while we visit or call a parent.

Animals are essentially wonderful beings, I did not know much about hamsters until now, I am surprised that they only live three years, it is very little time, without a doubt every day we learn something.

Although their life time is somewhat short, it does not mean that it is not of quality, we should love our pets and give them the attention needed to live well.

Hamsters are fairly independent and can entertain themselves for extended periods of time, provided their housing is properly enriched with toys, bedding, and opportunities for burrowing and climbing. Still, to be happy and well-adjusted, your hamster should receive daily handling and interaction. Keep in mind that you'll need to thoroughly clean your hamster's cage every week.

This reminds me of losing my hamster in the tall grass when I was a kid. I often went out in the farmers field next to my parentshouse with my hamster on a string (just tied a simple string around his belly and went out in the fields). But one time, when the grass was really tall I pulled on the string and there was no hamster attached to it. I screamed like hell and my parents came running thinking I hurt my self. My hole family ended up searching over an hour for my hamster and gladly found him playing in the grass eventually.
