Red-Shouldered Hawk or Red-Tailed Hawk?
Inquiring minds want to know!
I believe this fierce looking bird of prey is of the Red-Shouldered variety
But I've been wrong before...
Latin Name: Buteo lineatus:
Classified as a Raptor
But I personally don't think they bare any resemblance to those intelligent pack hunters of Jurassic Park fame...
This pretty bird has been hanging around our homestead for quite a few weeks now. Gazing longingly at our rabbits and ducks.
To the best of my knowledge, none of our ducks have met their end at the hand, er talons, of this fine-feathered friend.
Fly, fly, fly away. You let me fly so high. Oh fly, fly, so high against the sky, so high I almost touched the sky...
Thanks for the inspiration Bett!
Thanks for Reading!
As Always,
I'm going with juvenile red-shouldered hawk. The juvenile forms of raptors are always tricky for me, but juvenile red-tailed hawks have a dark mark on the underwing that I'm not seeing in the photos. The size could also be a clue--red tailed hawks are huge!
Neat photos, regardless. I love the sunlight-through-the-wings.

I don't know the difference, but it sure is noble looking when it sits on the branch like that. :)

Just a guess but looks like a immature red tail hawk.

That's what I thought too, but I found out that a Red Tail usually has more solid white belly and neck. From the pictures this hawk definitely had more of a blotchy banded pattern. Dunno? Thanks for your comment!

I'll bet!
Since it apparently isn't having any luck, it might fly away and try elsewhere. Unless you have a colony of mice or rats you don't know about.
