Yeah, it has been the traditional way before chicks for eggs and chicks for meat were bred separately (just like with cows). The separation started in the 1960ies when meat was started to be produced the industrial way. Male chicks bred for eggs had no use as meat deliverers so one began to kill them directly after the hatching. This is still standard in the meat industry.
