Firehawks - The Crazy Fire Starters of AustraliasteemCreated with Sketch.

in animals •  6 years ago  (edited)

howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

Guys.. I saw this article about these nutso birds in Northern Australia
and wanted to see if anyone has heard of this phenomenon, especially
my wonderful Steemit friends from Down Under.

I know there are droughts going on there and just imagine the fire
potential in the Northern Grasslands with parched soil and dry grass!
Yikes..so you may have a fire going on that the firefighters are
working like the dickens to put out.. and then these yahoos show up!

What they do is swoop down and grab a burning stick and fly off with
it to an unburned area of grass located next to a clearing or a road.
In this photo they are gathered to catch prey that runs from the fire
into the road.

180112-firehawks-1.jpg

Then they drop the burning stick and start a fire, thus forcing the
rodents and reptiles and such out into the open where they can
snatch them up! lol. It's clever..actually brilliant for a bird-brain..
but then the firefighters have another fire to contend with.

Is that the craziest thing you ever heard of birds doing? I mean this
is using tools and it's strategic planning! There are three kinds of
Fire birds which do this. The Black Kites, Whistling Kites and the
Brown Falcon.

here's a Brown Falcon:
IMG_3671.jpg

Not only that but they will go to a fire which is all but extinguished
and burning out because it is up against a river or some natural
barrier, and they pick up burning embers and take them to the other
side of the natural barrier and restart the fire there!

Here is a description by an Aboriginal man Waipuldanya:

"I have seen a hawk pick up a smoldering stick in its claws and drop it
in a fresh patch of dry grass half a mile away, then wait with its mates
for the mad exodus of scorched and frightened rodents and reptiles."

African-Savanna-Body-Image-01092018-1.jpg

So the Aborigines have known about this and observed it for
centuries but the white folk are just now finding out about it, of
course.

Scientists are setting up a research group composed of them and
Aboriginal ranger groups to see what they can discover about the
way these birds work and what can be done about them.

180112-firehawks-full.jpg

By the way, the Aborigines have inhabited and managed the
grasslands with controlled burning for at least 50,000 years. Over
millennia, Aboriginal people have accumulated an unparalleled
understanding of this ecosystem and the animals that inhabit it —
knowledge that is in danger of being lost as cultural traditions are
abandoned by the younger generations.

It's a shame that this knowledge is being lost but the government
will spend millions on this research project I'm sure but my question
is..why don't they just ask the Aborigines about those birds?

Birds are alot smarter than we thought though and I'm sure we'll be
even more impressed when they finish the study.

Thanks so much for reading folks!

awesome article. i'll ask my elders next i get a chance.

howdy again dunstuff! where do you live and who are your elders?

im an aussie.
my elders are those before me. the people forgotten by beurocracy

well howdy there dunstuff! so you are saying that you are an Aborigine? Can you expand a little?

im half cast. my dads aboriginal, and his mum is ... was.... full blooded.
i really need to head back out and spend some time with them.

sir dunstuff! well that's very interesting indeed and it would be wonderful to know what you learn when you talk to them!

Wow opportunistic little guys.
Great survival instinct for them not so much for everyone else

isn't that amazing sugarcreek? I think if they were in Texas everyone would just shoot them all. yeah they take care of themselves while they burn the countryside down! lol. bless you.

I hadn't heard of that. It must be really frustrating for the firefighters to deal with. Time to equip the firetrucks with shotguns.

Nope, not a redneck.

because we are somehow more important than birds, right?

howdy there dunstuff! well, yes humans take priority over birds if it's a matter of our survival or food supply but I'm sure that Australia will work toward a solution which is good for us without endangering the birds. thank you so much for your comment!

hahaha! somehow I knew you wouldn't qualify for this redneck trait noname! I'm surprised they haven't used shotguns, that would be the Texas way but I suppose they're more civilized down there.

Isn't Australia more strict on guns than Texas? Actually, I think everyone in the world is more strict on guns than Texas.

  ·  6 years ago (edited)

no sir Texas has surprisingly strict ones but Australia doesn't even hardly allow anyone to have them, that's why gun crimes and other types of crimes have gone up so much because the criminals know that the law abiding citizens are disarmed!
it's the same story everywhere. the more free the gun laws and the more guns that people are allowed to have the lower the crime, same stats everywhere in the world.

Woaah.. Really 😮😮!! Can't believe they do that... Damn clever..
Wondering Now what other strategies animal life have.. to survive?

Posted using Partiko Android

ha! howdy to you my talented artist friend! well, I don't think you want to know, I think it involves taking over the human race! lol.
I don't know but I didn't realize that birds could strategize like that! it's almost eery.
thank you so much for commenting!

Haha.. I don't know somehow I found this thought a bit comforting.. Only two things to care about, food and where to nest.. 😅

Posted using Partiko Android

oh sometimes I wish that life could be that simple for us humans too I agree and can see why that thought could be a bit comforting to you, you are a good thinker itravelarts!

It doesn't look so comforting now....🤣
https://steemit.com/art/@itravelarts/army-of-ravens

haha! hey! yes I finally saw your post, it's crazy and very good!

So @janton if you ever start a fire in Texas and it spreads you can blame the falcon! Good to know!

haha! sir blanchy! only you would think of that angle but it IS a good one in case I needed an excuse real fast. lol.

Cleaver birds.

Birds are smarter than we think!

This is the first time I have ever heard of this, but I have to say I agree with you that it is brilliant on the bird's part. Very cool info to learn, thanks for sharing.

howdy sir papacrusher! isn't it an amazing story? dang smart birds, and how do you stop them unless you use a shotgun but even then they wouldn't be able to patrol everywhere they could be.

you still working the grave yard shift?

nek minnit, bird sets firetruck alight XD

I'm off tonight. I've got 5 more nights then I'm back on days for 4 months. Hopefully, I'll meet some more interesting folks befire switching.

howdy again sir papacrusher! does that mean you don't meet interesting people during the daytime hours?

Oh no, I definitely meet interesting people during the day, but there is a wonderfully, special breed of people that inhabit the night. It is a magical time when they let their fangs show and their true natures loose.

hahaha! sir papacrusher..that doesn't sound like a magical, wonderful time! lol

Es increible lo inteligente que son esas aves, las fotos se ven muy bien, un abrazo @janton

¡jaja! Estoy de acuerdo mi amigo, es increíble de ver. ¡Ve a aprender algo todos los días en steemit!

Wow, this is about the most fascinating thing I've read in a long time. Usually nature has a purpose for everything but this is really strange! I'm curious what they will discover in the studies. I would think that the Aborigines do have some knowledge and wisdom about it.

Great post! Really enjoyed reading this. Thanks for sharing. Resteeming!

howdy there youhavewings! I just went to your blog and saw the photo with the seagulls against the sun, wow!
anyway yes I was shocked at these crazy like a fox birds. I didn't know that birds could be clever but these are!
frustrating for the poor firefighters though.
thanks so much for commenting!

Thank you, @janton! You are much too kind.

Oh yes, birds are very intelligent creatures for sure! LOL

I was just wondering if this is some sort of built in 'instinct' with the birds or they are being troublemakers. If they are just being troublemakers, perhaps the firefighters can negotiate with them and come up with a treaty ;) LOL It is a fascinating story - very fascinating. Birds are usually afraid of fires so why would they pick up fire?

Yes, crazy like a fox - you're a hoot @janton - I so miss the southern sayings. Always made me laugh. I'm in NC now so don't get as much up here.

I'm following you just so I can read your words. Grinnin' like a possum eatin' a sweet tater!

Have a wonderful day!

hahaha! howdy again youhavewings! that is so nice of you and I thought they would still have lots of sayings in North Carolina, is that not still the South?

or has it become to urbanized? "Grinnin' like a possum eatin' a sweet tater!" hahaha! I love that one too, great job and thank you so much for commenting!

as far as the birds and their actions go, I don't know, that's what was so fascinating about this story, I think they are just alot smarter than we thought because obviously they can plan, use tools and get food for themselves!
alot of humans cain't even do that!

Yes, North Carolina is considered the South (I think up to Virginia) although that line has certainly become grey. My area is a bit more urbanized and increasing by the day. When we first moved here, we lived in the 'sticks' hehe There are a lot of areas in NC that are very much still simple with the southern culture in tact - which I love. I'm not real fond of miles of strip malls and cell phone towers and we have a lot of big city migration here - population has tripled. I used to live in Mobile, Al and Louisiana - they are also unrecognizable. Kinda sad. I think culture and traditions are important - everything is becoming so homogenized these days.

yes Ma'am! same here in Texas with over 1,000 people a day moving here, most from CA and NY so our Texas culture is going away and being replaced with socialist ideals. very sad. except in the rural areas like where we are.

Sound like you need to move back into more country areas, is that possible or practical?

I understand! I just watched a short documentary the other day on what is happening in SF and was shocked. It's soooo bad :( We also have family in Ca - it is very concerning.

We are planning a move, just don't know what that looks like yet. Definitely in the country though.

G. Edward Griffin has an excellent speech on the different types of government - very educational. ;)

howdy back youhavewings! what is happening in San Francisco? I haven't heard.

I learned something new today, thanks to you. I have never heard of such a thing before. It does sound like a good strategy.
But there is already a fire, why would they start another one? And carrying a smothering stick, won't that burn their peaks? Amazing!

howdy sir quotes-haven! I don't know why the fire that is already burning isn't good enough for them, ask an Aborigine I guess. lol. thank you sir.

OK. Cheers! :-)

amazing info , I have never heard of such a thing in birds , I wonder why there do it ?

howdy winchestergirl! yes Ma'am well they have somehow figured out how to drive the small animals out of where they're hiding, you know, smoke them out into the open so they can have more to eat, it's too smart for birds!

most animals are smart , I think even smarter than us ha ha x

hey speak for yourself! lol. I think I can outsmart a dang bird at most things at least!

yep I guess you can !!! have a good day x

This is a really neat post. I, again, find my self exposed to something new. I had no idea birds could be so clever. I wonder of there are any of these critters in California!

haha! oh you mean they might be out there setting fires? yikes. there's supposed to be only located in Australia and I don't think we need them here!

No we don't! Looks like Australia has a secret weapon hee hee

yeah oh my squirrelbait they could do terrible damage in California! wow. terrorist birds!

That's wild. Literally. My favorite birds are birds of prey. They always have that sharp, wise look in their eyes.

howdy there ginnyannatte..so good to see you giving your 2bit opinion here..I mean your highly esteemed and respected opinion here. thank you.
yes those are the best targets to shoot out of the sky!

You eat hawk? Interesting. I can see it now, you hunkered down on some shrubbery, gun in hand. You shoot down a beautiful hawk, and then suddenly it's mate swoops down on you, and your magic cowboy hat is lost to it's talons.

That's what happened isn't it?

ahahaha! oh no not the cowboy hat! dang birds! lol. that's a nightmarish image that you just painted there ginnyannette, that's mean. see I told everyone you had a vicious streak! lol.

Vicious? You should see Big Dog.

howdy this fine Monday ginnyannatte! oh Big Dog! I love that guy! yeah I think he's Jack's cousin.

why don't they just ask the Aborigines about those birds?

I think we both know the answers to that one, @janton and it is not a pretty answer.

haha! yes Ma'am does big government ever do anything that is the most logical and most efficient? hardly ever.

I would be totally shocked if they did!

Hi @janton. A very smart bird that has learnt to take whatever opportunities it can to get food.

why don't they just ask the Aborigines about those birds?

The simple answer is sometimes the best, but unfortunately too many people think they are the only ones who can find out things!

I remember doing controlled burning on my grandma's farmland every year. It was fascinating to me to "get to" light fires but I think it also set up a deep respect for the power of fire and the intelligence behind controlled burns to keep fires from destroying things and taking over.

Great post, intriguing subject (I'd never heard of these birds) and wonderfully engaging writing as always.

oh thank you so much Byn! that means alot and that is so interesting that you actually took part in controlled burns. what HAVEN'T you done anyway? lol.

I've had an odd and varied life, that's for sure!!!

ha! yes Ma'am but that's what makes you so unique and has to come into your writing much of the time. Are you making any headway on finding publishers or is that what you've been working on?

Talk about "firebirds"... This is pretty cool, but also somewhat frightening... Thank you very much for sharing this, I thought I knew a lot about animal behaviour but this was a new one for me... This might have influenced the whole phoenix legend...?
/FF

haha! the whole Phoenix legend! yes very good sir very good..the people on steemit are so sharp and clever and witty. yeah this must be just in Australia, they can have it, I mean it's cool but they can do some damage especially in a drought.
thanks friendly-fenix!

Cowboy this is crazy fascinating! Yes, birds are insanely intelligent and I would love to hear what the Aborigines have to say. I much more trust their wisdom over the "research" of government as you know ;) <333 Thank you for taking the time to share the awesomeness.

thank you thereikiforest! well I'm sure I'll find out what the research group discovers but I'm not going to tell you.

LOL sounds good Cowboy, sounds good haha

what?? what do you mean "sounds good"? you're supposed to be begging me to tell you when I find out, I thought you loved those birds?

I am not very good with "supposed to's" lol ;) <333 (maybe a little bird already told me?) grinning ear to ear

maybe. I wouldn't doubt it!

;) <333

It is amazing that you are reading this interesting article in Texas about Australia and I did not know about it at all. We are one small world janton, all connected.

yes Ma'am and I thought about you when I read this because of the food relief plans for the farmers because of the drought and those silly birds could catch alot of dry grasslands on fire!

Dear janton can it be There is something wrong with your pictures in this blog they are not LOADING?!?

hey there brittandjosie.. as far as I know there isn't a problem, they load on my computers and no one else has said anything and I'm sure they would. I hope they load because they're some cool photos.

They did it ..... maybe I was to quick😉

Fantastic information. I'm not surprised by this behaviour. Every species is in a constant evolution... but that evolution is so gradual that we hardly ever notice it.

PS: Your post was featured by @celinavisaez in her entry for The Pay It Forward Contest and that's how I've found it!

well howdy there trincowski! thank you sir..I've never seen that username before who featured my post so I'll have to go and thank her!
thanks again!

LOL...I don't think this is right. We need to have these birds arrested and tried for arson.

haha! exactly! hey you know what I thought about, these things could be used as terrorist birds..brought over here and put in California to help spread forest fires!

LOL...But with their high-powered space-based DEW weapons, who needs birds...lol...

haha! oh yeah I forgot about that! they show that one photo of the house cut in half, wow.

Yeppers. Little more "efficient" than birds.

It is my first time to know about birds causing such problem. If that is true, it is indeed a big problem to combat forest fires every now and then. I am thinking this can be the same case of that lionfish on my post that we need a robot to hunt these birds.

I came across your article through @celinavisaez who featured it in her post as an entry to the Pay it Forward Curation Contest. Apparently, people love featuring your articles. Good going! 😃

dear macoolette...that's what we need! a robot that can keep these crazy birds from starting fires like those in your fascinating article.
I don't know any celinavisaez, I've never seen that name..that's interesting.
thanks for that information, I will look her up and thank her.
as far as your post on helping those kids, I referred it to Lynncole and I think she's going to recommend it to c-squared so you can get more attention and exposure, they don't have high dollar votes but it helps to get exposure. she is hard to get ahold of but i talk to her on discord and will remind her about that today.

I think celinavisaez is a regular of the pifc contest. I got to know her there.

Thank you very much to you and @lynncoyle1 for referring my article to c-squared! I can see the effect now. The article has more than 200 upvotes. Thanks again to both of you!

Hey, @janton.

I have never heard of birds doing this, but it's not that surprising that they would take something that can be naturally occurring and use it to their own advantage. I also agree that the government regularly, more times than not, does a lousy job managing anything, let alone land, and that it is best left up to the locals to do it if they have a mind to.

Since someone else brought it up, I will just mention that their are two photos that do not load properly (the two in the middle, so No. 2 and No. 3) when using Safari or Firefox. Chrome, though, it does work fine in. I'm not sure why that is, but it happens fairly regularly with at least one of your photos. Instead of getting the photograph, this is what shows up:

It doesn't even act like text (you can't copy it), but an image, so it must be the placeholder information or something. At any rate, I'm not sure what can be done about it. If you're using the same process every time with the photos, than I don't know what's going on.

ok thanks so much Glen, I didn't know that, I guess I should double check my posts by using another browser than Chrome to check those, thank you!

Seriously!?! WOW! Animals are more clever than we think ;)

Thank you for sharing this my dear friend! Everyday is a school day and I learned something new today!

haha! you were forced to! I like that, I thought you would enjoy that. if you didn't I'd have to write you off my list of potential business partners!

I really did! I like to learn interesting details about animals. I've never heard of such birds in Europe. Will need to check if we actually have them here.

Business partners? What kind of business? Lol

lol! as far as business partners I was going to say "monkey business" but I don't know if you have the same meaning of that there.
here it would mean something "shady" so that was going to be a joke but I don't want to get into trouble because of the language understanding.

Europe nor North America has those type of birds, it's an Australian specialty.
I'm not sure what kind of business, I don't have anything in mind yet but it's a distinct possibility in the future don't you think?

I certainly would be open to the idea, it would be so much fun. too bad we don't know anybody who has experience with company finances that we could rely on for that part of the venture! lol.

I'm just saying that God may give one of us an idea, probably you, so be on the lookout. hhehehe

Strategic planning indeed @janton! I've heard about them but these are great photos! Here in SA we have the two legged fire starters. But it goes hand in hand with the other wickedness.

ha! yes Ma'am well at least these here are doing it for food and not destruction. oh there are huge areas that are prime for wildfires in Africa with that drought huh? yikes.

So darn clever!!! I did not know this @janton! Wow ... kinda speechless actually :)

Yep, I just opened the door for all kinds of jokes I know haha

hahaha! you're funny lynn but this time no I'm just glad that you liked my post, I thought it was cool because no one had ever heard of such a thing and today I did a post on how smart Crows are.

There is a tree with a seedpod that only releases the seeds during a fire. The Aborigines would control burning s for a number of reasons but were stopped because the Europeans thought they were pyromaniacs. 50,000 years of localised environmental education destroyed.

howdy sir tarazkp! well sir..that sounds about right, 50,000 years of knowledge and application destroyed, such an amazing fact. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Morning janton. ha i loved the photo of the falcom. He is cute standing tall in that branch his feet firmly gripped on it. His eye is focused ready to devour something. And that other photo were the birds just got scattered away frightened with the fire.
I witnessed a fire too last week or so, for the first time, but when I saw it i thought that maybe some passenger from a truck or car had thrown away a cigarette butt that started the fire. Here's the photo I took on that day on the freeway.

IMG_7528.JPG

Oh, and the other picture you have where the bird look like he was almost got caught with the fire about to be a roasted bird. Oh, poor thing had to escape and fly away from death.

Yeah, gov likes expenditures - but this time maybe that is controlled now with 45 being careful where US $ goes. And the biggest is the Paris Accord - he pulled out from that. That's a good thing he did that, isn't?

hey there roger5120..that is a good picture of the fire along that road that you got. I hope it got put out fast.

haha.."45" yes.. I don't hear people refer to him as that, where are you from originally?
yes it is very very good that he pulled out of the idiotic Paris Accords.

Lol. Glad you like the pic. Yeah, i think so, there were plenty of firetrucks coming in. Fire's scary and crazy.
ha really? you don't hear other people calling that number? No, I'm not the only one - there are some who refer him 45 but that's a good # though. I don't know probably just a shield to protect anything what the blue could do from attacks. ha ha that's funny you're asking my origin - I'm originally from the land of the morning the beautiful land of love. lol can you guess what that is?

roger5120! well... "the land of the morning"...huh.. Texas! it's Texas right? lol. no I give up, I know it's not Texas. ok so not only is it the land of the morning but the land of love?
there is no such place! you're an alien!

Hi janton how ye doin'? No, never been to Texas. How's the border going on there? Is it almost finish? lol
Yup, that's right - from the land of the morning, the land of love. That's the national flag anthem btw. You didn't pass the test. lol
Alien.. you mean ET? Nah, but maybe if i get to go to Mars then I'll be an ET

ahahaha! yes an alien like ET!
do you consider the Philippines to be an actual land of love or do you just miss her and do you ever go back to visit?

lol. yeah janton that kind of alien, they have their own cool planet. Nah, those words are from the national anthem I got it from there. You know, just like the Star Spangled Banner...ha ha ha.
But then again, yeah I guess so, the person who created the flag must have thought so, but I kinda agree with it. Miss her, well sometimes - my parents were buried there.
I've only been back to visit 3 times because of death in the family. Not really a fun vacation.

oh I'm sorry to hear about your parents, that was a long time ago? do you have a family of your own now?

I enjoy your topics @janton. I guess I could take a lesson from your book. when I find something I find interesting, share it

Very smart for birds. I guess that's how they've learned to adapt to their environment. I guess that due to the temperatures that would be the best way to get their prey out of their holes.

Aborigines are very in tune with their environment like so many other indigenous people. We can learn a lot from them.

As you know you were featured ...AGAIN lol!! by @celinavisaez

howdy there tryskele! good to see you here, it's so nice of you to comment. I know you get all over the place and I enjoy your excellent comments.

Yes..regarding the birds, the heat of the fire drives out their pray so they can swoop down and snatch them away, it's quite ingenious.

And yes we COULD learn alot from indigenous peoples but do we ever?
lol.
bythe way, there is someone who is an Aborigine I believe, who has commented to me and said he would ask his "elders" about the birds and when I asked him who is elders were he said "im an aussie.
my elders are those before me. the people forgotten by beurocracy."

So I replied and will hopefully get more information about this.
I saw that about the featured post by celina and I thanked her, with the google translator, she doesn't speak English at all? I assumed not since she wrote to me in Spanish, at least I hope it was Spanish! lol.

About my topics, yeah I never know from one day to the next what I'm going to post about, with the Engagement League I don't have the 2 or 3 hours it takes to do a good history post which is what I like to do, about the Old West or cowboys so the quality isn't what I would like.

How do you decide what to post about? I envy these people who can put out 5 posts a day with ease!

I don't get around as much as I would like. LOL It will be really interesting what he says about the birds.

Yes celina only speaks spanish. It's admirable that she take the time to put everything through translate so she can be more involved.

As for topics, I guess do the same thing. I have a few I have researched due to the subject matter, but mostly do the same thing. I just see something interesting and go with it or see where my brain goes LOL.

If you look at some these that post 5 times a day some are really good, some are kind of mediocre. I think a quite a few just write and save them up, then set them on auto post through esteem or steemauto. Still a lot of work.

howdy this fine Saturday tryskele! yes Ma'am I have to agree with everything you said. I know one prolific poster and I asked him how he got out so many each day and he said he has so much material from years of blogging that it only takes him about 5 minutes to get one out! lol.

He can put out 15 in two days and then take a couple days off so it's a good system if you have all that together.

Yes, Celina is very impressive, I just hope the google translator program is accurate!
thanks so much for commenting back, have a great weekend!
