Of all the allies that people in the animal-welfare organizations around the world the most famous is likely Bob Barker. I recall how the show The Price is Right would end every single show with Bob reminding people to get their animals spayed or neutered

I was just a kid and didn't really understand how important these words were but it was and is absolutely true. This is why our primary goal at Krabi Animal Welfare was, is, and always will be focusing on the sterilization of the stray animal population. Dogs and cats will mate as often as possible and since they do not face any natural threats their population numbers will quickly go well over the levels that the area they are in is able to maintain.
In the wild, this proliferation of offspring would have been necessary for the continuation of the species but in modern times this simply results in dramatic suffering for all the animals involved.
Bob Barker realized this a long time ago and has always been a huge celebrity in the animal welfare world.

Barker's replacement on The Price is Right, Drew Carey, ended up asking everyone to get their pets spayed or neutered at the end of every show by Bob's request. Barker's activism extended well beyond just saying that catchphrase at the end of the game show though and he has put millions of dollars of his own money and raised many millions more through various organizations that he has teamed up with. It isn't just dogs and cats that he advocates for though, he has helped to get animals released from captivity such as zoos and was heavily involved in the boycott of SeaWorld as well.
He walked away from a lucrative gig hosting the Miss America pageant because the show awarded a fur coat to the winner. He threatened that he would leave if they didn't stop with this award and when they went and did it anyway, he held true to his promise and resigned.
Barker is well-known as a friend to animals to the point that the group called Sea Shepherd, which tracks and attempts to shut down illegal whaling operations around the world but primarily around Japan, named their ship the "Bob Barker."

His name is synonymous with animal-welfare and likely always will be. He lived a long life so his passing at the age of 99 isn't something that should be mourned. He died of natural causes at his home on August 26th, 2023. Although he hasn't physically participated in animal-welfare activities since around the turn of the millennium, he got the ball rolling, so to speak, on a lot of animal-welfare projects around the world. He was an inspiration for those of us that work in this industry, and will forever be remembered as a hero to those without a voice.
RIP Bob.
