The Love Between Homeless People and their Animal Companions

in animals •  7 years ago

The deep emotional and psychological connection between human animals and other animals can be profound. Many people have a deep emotional valuation of nonhuman animals they connect with, and even see their animal companions as the most important others in their lives, more than other human-to-human relations they have. The nonhuman animals are their life, and often the animals share this same devotion for their human companions.

In my own work on morality I have discovered it's intimate connection with the psychological dimension of animal existence. How we treat others, all others, not just human animals but all animals, is a reflection of our psychological development in moral comprehension.

I have made posts about the emotional lives of animals that we connect to and value. Nohuman animals can provide an emotional connection like a human can and help to make people feel better. Animal companions have improved the quality of life of many people.

Homeless humans are a subset of our society that go ignored, and many nonhuman animals share that homelessness and isolation of being ignored too. Both humans and nonhumans are neglected and shunned by the rest of society at large.

As they say, "dogs are a aman's best friend", and this is demonstrated in the art activist project My Dog is My Home that shows the redeeming care and love between homeless people and their dog friends.

They ask us all:

What is home?

Is it four walls?

Or can it be built in the heart of a loved one?

What if that heart belonged to someone with four paws?

This elucidates the saying of "home is where the 'heart' is". Also, it doesn't need to be a cat or dog with paws. It can be pigs or cows with hooves (you can find youtube videos). Human and nonhuman animals of various kinds can connect on an inter-species level and share emotional experiences. A relationship can develop between nonhuman animals of different species as well.

There are probably better videos if you want to search for them. There is even a case where the connection made by an large cat predator animal with a baby animal it would normally have killed. And they remained friends. I think the cat even stopped following the lower consciousness predator behavior in favor of the higher consciousness connection to another being it developed (caring to not harm it). I think it may have died from starvation due to it's new mindset. But it shows the power of the psychological dimension and connection to others.

But back to the homeless people and animals.

Homeless people aren't looked upon favorably, and seeing a homeless person with an animal creates different reactions for different people. Some of us might think "should a homeless person even be allowed to care for an animal?", maybe for the sake of the person's own survival, or maybe for the animal being better off somewhere else while ignoring the person in the same situation. We can be more sympathetic, empathetic and compassionate for the the animal but not the person. However, some might instead see the two forsaken lives together and want to help both of them.

We often want to transform the lives of others, but don't know how. The simplest thing to do is give money to try to help those less fortunate. It's estimated 3.5 million people in the US experience homelessness each year, not that they remain homeless the whole time or afterwards. The estimates also say 1/4 of the homeless are also taking care of animals.

The My Dog is My Home project interviewed people who have or continue to suffer, not only from homelessness itself, but also from violence, mental illness or inadequate healthcare. Yet, despite all of that they'll brighten up with positive emotions when they are sharing the story of their beloved animal companions. Whereas they would have continued to feel a lack of love and safety alone, their friendship with our fellow animal brethren has allowed them to feel loved and safe again.

The bond developed with their dogs is so strong that they don't accept housing that doesn't allow animals, and they even give up food for themselves so that their nonhuman friend can eat instead.

Many people villainize the homeless, while most of us ignore them. I recently watched a movie with Richard Gere called "The Dinner" which dealt with teenagers that burned a homeless woman alive and filmed it while laughing. For some reason some people don't see the humanity in homeless people. But when a nonhuman animal has this mutual relationship where they also care for human, then it shows another who does care for a homeless person, and they aren't even human. This expresses the humanity of homeless people, that they aren't simply disposable. Maybe people can start to recognize the humanity of the homeless, instead of just saying "get a job you bum".

Here is the exhibit for man named SPIRIT and his babies (his dogs), as they mean everything to him and he means everything to them.

My Dog Is My Home - SPIRIT

Victoria Lawson, author of the article on multispecies poverty and politics in LA, said:

"We need to start to think critically about how we understand ‘the other’; seeing homeless people as flawed and inadequate allows us to see ourselves as stable and good."

In order to get more homeless shelters, subsidizing to accept pets in housing, to make it affordable and to tackle mental health care, the majority of people will need to understand issues of poverty and homelessness better. Knowing that their lives are full of love can potentially help many people connect with them better.

Here are some former posts I did on the human-nonhuman animal connection:

Thank you for your time and attention! I appreciate the knowledge reaching more people. Take care. Peace.

You touched on it a little @Krnel, some people walking by a homeless person may not be inclined to give them money. Now on the other hand, if that same homeless person has a dog with him, more people will give him money....People will give more money to the homeless guy with the dog because they view the dog as something that can't help itself. A homeless person, besides from being handicap, should be able to get some type of job. A dog can not.

Nice Post.

Indeed, the dog gets more sympathy, empathy and compassion. One is "truly" helpless as a homeless animal, while the other "should get a job" so not deserving... Thanks for the feedback.

I agree 100%. That is why I believe in adopting a dog if you plan on adding a new member to the family. "Homeless" dogs can't help it, and a lot of them are great dogs.....Trust me I know from experience...They are brothers and both rescued.

Gah! Those faces. Rescue is a huge part of my life <3

I'm going to look into the My Dog is My Home project; I hadn't heard of it until reading your post.

In the city I live in, one big obstacle is that rental housing often does not allow pets. I volunteer for a rescue and people often have to surrender their animals so that they can have a place to live... breaks my heart.

Indeed it sucks. Some forgo the shelter because they won't abandon their friends :( Thanks for the feedback.

I worked with homeless people for a year (at a railway mission) and do agree, these bonds can be very strong and can be of great support for a person in need.

Yeah. People need to expand their awareness of other animals as well. We still support and participate in the harm, violence, enslavement, exploitation and killing of innocent beings that did us no harm, just because we think we "need" to eat them when we can live, survive and thrive better without engaging in that lower base survival conditioning we are still stuck repeating.

I really liked what you wrote. My husband and I love our dogs with all our hearts. We have 2 rescues right now. One of which no one wanted because they said he was too needy. He is the best protector ever. Dog's can feel, they have emotions and they will love us unconditionally. Dogs don't see homeless, they see someone that loves them.

Well said. They feel indeed, as do other nonhumans. Thanks for the feedback.

I wish more humans would realize this. Just because they are not walking on 2 legs, paying bills, talking like humans, doesn't mean they are not as equal in a sense.

Indeed. Have you ever seen The Superior Human?

As someone who was/is homeless, and has been around many with animals, there is no love more powerful than that type of love. You can have that love for an animal, a child/baby, or an adult, but it's extremely rare for most people if not impossible.

They're your only true friend, the person who's always there for you, the one who will hold you at night, the one that cares about how you feel, the one that needs you just as much as you need them, the one that warns you of danger as you do for them, the one who will never steal from you, and the one that will always be with you and never hurt you.
You can be fully yourself and honest with them, and nobody else.

I've seen someone jump off a train moving 20-30mph and smash their shit up after their dog got spooked by a bang and jumped off right as the train was starting to move.
The bond they have is the bond that if broken shatters you and likely compels you to murder whoever broke it.

Thank you for sharing :)

I got a puppy at one of the most depressing periods of my life and she helped me love life again. I swear I've never felt as close to anyone or anything as much as I felt close to her. She considered me her mother (as strange as it may sound, mostly because I got her when she was about a week old and knew no one else beside me). We shared so many good memories and I always like how she loved me unconditionally.

:) Thanks for sharing such a warming story.

You're welcome!

Isn't it amazing how animals can give your life such meaning?

Yes they do, and I learned a lot from the experience! It changed my life!

Very nice and well thought out post @Krnel . I believe its one of the better ones I have seen since I have been on here. I just posted one about Bees if you are interested! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks :) You should link to your posts when you have related material, [name](http://link.com)

You said Bees...

lol sorry. Here.

I misunderstood. I thought you meant within my posts. That's why I showed you the first link since it had links within in it to related items. lol

We have 2 adopted dogs, and we had 2 adopted cats and adopted one more cat, it's amazing to see their love for us humans and us for them, it's a sadness because one of the dogs was blinded by age. I do not know how humans still have the ability to abandon animals.

@anacristinasilva I totally hear ya on that. It saddens me to no end when I see people abandon their dogs, or hurt them in any way. We live in the country, inside city limits, but still out country way. Our local animal shelter is always getting puppies that were just dumped on someones land.We try to help with vet bills for them because the volunteer lady is always doing so much for these dogs and cats.

By myself, I would not have dogs and cats because they get sick and I suffer. But I see in the street abandoned and without thinking adoto, because it is a cruelty to leave them abandoned.
Congratulations on your attitude, few do this, this is called Love! I admire you. Continue like this, the good that is done here has a reward.

Good post buddy. Some of my best relationships have been with my animals. My pitbull was a rescue, his name is parker. He was frozen to the ground in a park someone left him in, hence the rescuers named him parker and I stayed with it. One of the best things I ever done. In regaurds to the homeless issue heres a great video of a millionare going homeless to get reactions

Thanks for the feedback and additional info. At the bottom of the article I have some older posts, one was about what you experienced, that many children have better companionship with nonhuman animals than their own siblings :P

My pleasure, ill give it a look

This is so true. There's such a strong connection with animals that they are just like family. Everyone should treat them as such and enjoy the gift of joy they bring

They are our fellow animal kin: Humans and the Animal Kingdom - An Emotional Kinship. Thanks for the feedback.

I'm happy someone put this topic out here. Many people feel sad for those animals who stay by the homeless person. From one side I understand their concern.. but I saw and met many homeless people who treated their dog better then a regular dog owner. I think all of us need a friend and feel love. Thanks for sharing this with us! I upvoted because it deserved for it!

Thanks and you're welcome ;) and thanks for the feedback. Stemit should be a place where people upvote because of the content, to upvote content for content and not because it will get them curation rewards, or vote-4-vote silliness. Then content would be popularized really but what people like, instead of just autovoting for authors, curation, etc.

Love this article, and love my dog. Hope I wont be homeless.. ;)

Yeah it's a good thing to avoid ;) No need for it to share that connection hehe.

Nice and emotional post it change your view towards life. I can connect to post thanks for sharing.

Very interesting post. .. Emotional too.
Thanks for sharing this @krnel
I've always admired your post.

krnel - I totally agree with you. Homeless animals and people have a special bond. I have seen many cases in towns in 3-4 countries where I have seen dogs curled up with persons sleeping on footpaths - each comforting the other. Thanks for this heart touching article. Upvoted.

I would be honored if you check my latest blogs when you have time. Your comments will be very valuable to enrich my experience. Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback, and I resteemd your post ;)

Thank you. Really appreciate your support. I am thrilled that my post will figure on your blog page! What an honor.

This philosophy that makes me touched, you choose animals for the story.
I salute!

Animals are important indeed, we need to expand our awareness of them beyond just caring about them being homeless. We as a species are enslaving, exploiting and killing billions each year, billions.

I am also surprised to be an animal hunter, they kill animals only for their personal gain.
I am very angry if there is such a person, animals also need to live like us.
How about your opinion?

Great post. Check out my profile if you have time :)

Opportunities form great people, follow me and I follow you thanks

Nice post, good job, I am joining your mind and words

I can directly relate. My dogs recent vet visit took (after donations) three days worth of food to pay for. Next week is going to be tight.
