Hello guys,

This post is not just about psychological point of view but also about nature, animal world and petlovers šŸ˜Š

I read some studies, experiences and stories of people who got different kind of animals from dogs/cats to snakes, spiders or scorpions.

The most important fact I have found out, that being ā€žpetloverā€œ is not in connection with our personalities. Doesnt matter if you are more introverted or extroverted person, goal oriented or people oriented one. Every person can be attracted to same or definitely different animal.

I formulated some tips, what can animals bring to our lives from mental and also physical point of view. I also added my own experience to each point.

ONE: Animals themselves help reduce our negativity

In a study conducted on approximately 100 pet owners (I read about it in Psychology Today article few years ago and couldnā€™t find it now), participants were subjected (they didnā€™t know about that) to a negative experience (social one). After that, they were asked to write about their best friend or their pet and the other group was asked to draw a map of their college campus (was called controlled group).
This study showed the fact, the participants who wrote about their pet/best friend showed zero negative feelings and were happy at the same level, even after the negative social experience. The ā€œcontrolled groupā€, on the other side, continued to experiencing negative feelings.

TWO: You will never be alone with them

They are strongly attracted to us, are addicted (hopefully most of time in positive way) and we will never feel alone. Someone would say it is not mostly suited to more introverted people, but I think any person needs to be alone, maybe in more quiet place and animals are not the one who disturb us. We can also play with them, hug with them and talk to them, unfortunately not to debate tough topics but you can call them by name, share your thought and they will always listen!

THREE: They motivate us to do activities

If you have a dog, you have to go for a walk with him, if you like to run or cycling, some of dogs could be your partner and will enjoy that. Even when you have got hamster or guinea pig, they also need some time to walk around the house, room or garden so you need to spend your time with them.

FOUR: They improve our health

Being with an animal reduces stress and stabilize our blood pressure. Connection with animal can hold us calmer and relaxed, also help us to take a break from any other activity, from work or any stressful situations. Moreover they reduce the risk of allergies. Interestingly enough studies have shown that being around pets early in life can reduce the risk of developing allergies. The department of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin did a study that found early exposure to dogs reduced the risk of developing some allergy diseases. https://www.pediatrics.wisc.edu/featured-stories/allergies Guinea pigs, rabbits and rats are also helpful to avoid some allergies and also diseases.

Personally I have breed dogs, cats, turtles, hamsters, fish and also guinea pigs. Nowadays, me and my girlfriend, we have got two small and cute rats, called by their colours, grey and white, which are very helpful and enjoyable most of our evenings to play with them, teaching them new skills like jumping or climbing.

What about you guys? Which animals do you have at home? How do you breed them? Have you ever thought why did you buy them? How are they helpful for you from mental/psychological point of view?

I would be very pleased for anything you are willing to share with me and others at this community.

Thank you very much
