Manga review: Wandering Island

in anime •  7 years ago

Some time ago I bought the first volume of the manga by one of my favorite mangakas - Kenji Tsuruta. Actually when I say I bought the first volume, I mean I bought all the volumes available, which is one. The said author is notoriously sporadic in his releases. So the question is whether the single volume is worth it, considering we won't see more for quite some time. The answer being - obviously yes.

After her grandfathers death a young woman is obsessing over an island that isn't on any maps. A legend says that the said island is wandering the seas.
The story of the manga is fairly simple. The protagonist has a package to air-deliver to the island and the mystery of it all is driving her to spend all her time searching for it. And yet you the reader are left curious about it as well.
If I had anything to say about the story is that it is what is needed. There is no needless details and it is there only for the benefit of the main draw of the authors works - the amazing art.

The manga is full of pages of no text with only the drawings to continue it. Drawings of great detail and style. You are left to breathe in the art unique to the mangaka and are almost unwilling to turn the pages.
Overall it is an amazingly drawn manga that tells more with it's drawing than the text bubbles. Few of them can boast such a claim and that makes it worth every penny.

I give the score of 9/10
