My word "Denjin" and what it means

in anime •  7 years ago

In Japanese, the suffix "jin" is used to refer to a type of person. (usually a race) And "den" is a prefix for anything that's electric, so i'd figure if you'd combine that with Akiabara meaning "electric town", it's a good match for us.

Now, as some of you already know, the word "otaku" has negative connotations in Japan, usually it's a derogatory name that non-anime fans give them over there. But i'll admit, I kept using this name myself, even though I already knew what it meant. (For there was no alternative word or phrase that was available to refer to ALL of us fans [anime and other Japanese culture lovers alike])

After some debate and conversation with some friends and members of this group that I started on Facebook, called "Find a Replacement for the word 'Otaku'", I decided to go with "denjin". I really hope that this, or another like word will stick.
