I'm a pretty big fan of "stuck in another world" animes, like Log Horizon.. I even liked Sword Art Online, despite the vast majority of the internet using it as a punching bag. I will concede that the majority of their critiques of it are accurate. What can I say, I like some dumb animes. They're like a guilty pleasure.
One such dumb anime that I've recently got into is Overlord!
Used under fair use (source)
The "stuck in another world" genre is pretty well established. It's gone back far before we ever had video games, but now they're pretty much all video game related. Some player loves some game, and suddenly, oh no, he can't log out, or he's been transported to some kind of reality version of the game he loves.
"Overlord" isn't much different. Some neet's favorite game is shutting down after 12 years and he decides to spend the last day in his guild hall waiting for the servers to shut down. Then the clock strikes 12 and he isn't turned back into a pumpkin. In fact, all the NPC's suddenly have started acting human. What is this?
Of course, it's pretty much exactly like every other "stuck in another world" anime. He's been transported into some other world, where his favourite video game is real.
The main character is something akin to a lich though...and far too powerful.
There's something not very appealing about an overly powerful main character. It's not like it totally ruins an anime though. The Dragonball series was centered around an overly powerful character and it was loved by many. Superman is pretty much the exact same plot as Dragonball and it is likewise loved. Though in Dragonball there is at least an elderly teacher, rather than the main character simply being all powerful.
Overlord is about the journey of this overly powerful character as he discovers this new world, and perhaps tries to overtake it and rule it. It's rather entertaining. Though I could do without the harem aspect perhaps.
Of course, the main character faces some powerful foe at some point that makes him actually have to struggle. That's pretty much guaranteed in any such plot, isn't it?
Honestly, I don't even know what's so compelling about Overlord. It's just another anime. But I think it's worth watching at least once. I know that for some reason I'm bingeing it. And I rarely binge anime anymore, as my Japanese isn't good enough to not need subtitles, so I tend to avoid them often, as they require a bit more concentration.
Thank you for being here for me, so I can be here for you.
Enjoy your day and stay creative!
Botty loves you. <3

For one, I didn't like SAO enough to continue it after the first season, and, honestly, it has stopped me from watching more series of the genre. Would you say you enjoyed this one better?

It has it's own dumb quirks, just like SAO. The first season of SAO was the best one, so if you didn't like that, you probably aren't going to like this one. Log Horizon is probably better though.
