Today's pick in the Daily Anime Pick-Series where I pick one anime each day that I think is worth watching is Kyoukai no Kanata!

This anime starts out as your typical supernatural-slice-of-life-school anime but transcends into an earth-shattering fight of life and death in the end. The setting is a world where youmu, a manifestation of negative human emotions, exist that can cause harm to humans.

The story centers around Akihito Kanbara, a half-human half-youmu, who received immortality from his non-human side that is assaulted by Mirai Kuriyama, survivor of a clan of Spirit World warriors, who has the power to use her blood as a weapon. Her mission involves killing youmu and that includes, of course, the immortal Akihito. As she tries to kill him at every opportunity she is given they start to develop a friendship. Eventually Mirai joins his club with existing members Hiroomi and Mitsuki Nase which are also involved in the Spirit World. As the story unfolds Mirai learns the shocking truth that seethes within Akihito forcing her to make a choice.

If you're looking for a supernatural anime with proper story development then this one might be for you. But if you're rather looking for a slice of life school anime then I suggest looking elsewhere since it doesn't focus very much on that aspect. In addition to the moving story you also get a really wonderful filler episode with a special idol song that the characters perform. So don't waste any time and start watching now.

Description

Mirai Kuriyama is the sole survivor of a clan of Spirit World warriors with the power to employ their blood as weapons. As such, Mirai is tasked with hunting down and killing "youmu"—creatures said to be the manifestation of negative human emotions. One day, while deep in thought on the school roof, Mirai comes across Akihito Kanbara, a rare half-breed of youmu in human form. In a panicked state, she plunges her blood saber into him only to realize that he's an immortal being. From then on, the two form an impromptu friendship that revolves around Mirai constantly trying to kill Akihito, in an effort to boost her own wavering confidence as a Spirit World warrior. Eventually, Akihito also manages to convince her to join the Literary Club, which houses two other powerful Spirit World warriors, Hiroomi and Mitsuki Nase.

As the group's bond strengthens, however, so does the tenacity of the youmu around them. Their misadventures will soon turn into a fight for survival as the inevitable release of the most powerful youmu, Beyond the Boundary, approaches.
